On September 25th, Boone High held its first meeting of it’s newest club: Gay-Straight Alliance. GSA is a national youth leadership program organization that connects school-based GSA clubs. It allows schools to create safe environments for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning) students in the form of a club. Boone’s club was started this year by freshmen, Seth Thomas and sophomore, Libby Penick, with Mrs. Sallen as the club sponsor. The club will meet every other Thursday to talk about LGBTQ community news, have fun, and plan the following week’s club activities. A second meeting was held on Thursday, October 2nd. During this meeting, it was decided that at the next meeting they will be making bracelets and selling them the following week as a fundraiser.
GSA has three main goals among schools: to create a safe environment in schools for students to support each other and learn about homophobia, transphobia, and other oppressions; educate the school community about homophobia, transphobia, gender identity, and sexual orientation issues; and fight discrimination, harassment, and violence in schools. This will help improve Boone’s comfort level for students and provide a safe environment for kids who feel threatened by homophobia and transphobia.
