On Thursday September 11, the Academic Team held their first practice of the school year. Per tradition, they kicked off the meeting with some snacks and goofing off. When they got down to practice it was a little rough going at first, due to the teams’ need for a program called questions unlimited. This is a system of quizzes and amazing trivia knowledge in multitudes of subjects, which is very valuable for the training of the team, and practice, and would be necessary to host any academic team even at BHS, as other schools do. Unfortunately, the program is hundreds of dollars, and just not in the budget. Though ruff at the start, once everyone got into the swing of it Team advisor, Peggy Watkins made the statement “ Prospects for this year are looking really good, we have some great returning students, and great new ones, who seem to have a real knack with random knowledge.”
Coming up on October 18, The team will be attending this years first competition at Algona vs Bishop Garagone and the surrounding schools in the area. Of the people who will be attending this competition, the A - Team is currently looking at being Emily Carey (team captain) Senior, Westen Powers, Junior, Liz Pfannes, Junior, Kalliee Hover, Sophomore, Kaitlyn Mellhosue, Freshman, and Edward Kivlahan, Freshman. Mrs. Watkins states “ Though our A-team is our best, it is looking as if we will actually have two excellent, strong teams The students all seem to have a really good confidence level. “
Unfortunately, due to Obamacare, and budget, the team will be taking school vans to the competition, rather than the usual school provided bus. A recent development for bus drivers requires no more than a twenty-nine hour work week, or a requirement of medicare. This has exponentially cut bus driving hours, because the school can not afford to provide these services. Academic Team is not currently a priority for the school’s allowance in the bus system of hours, which focuses more to the point of sports. Team advisor Mrs. Watkins will instead be driving one of the school vans, and has also asked a parent volunteer to drive the other.
