At Boone High School there are few classes that use computer skills and technology to apply to real-life applications. Computer Applications 2 is one of those classes, taught by business teacher, Benjamin Bravard. Bravard says; “This class offers advanced computer applications, for example we go over graphic design, we also do web design, audio and video editing so we’re trying to take them to the next level.”

This class is known for trying to get kids the experience that they will need in the future. One of the students who benefited from this class is Sophomore, Justin Elsner. Elsner says that because of the graphic design and video editing component it brought him into doing Boone TV. “Throughout half of the year Bravard was talking about how for Boone TV he wanted students to know Adobe Premiere.” Says Elsner.

"I saved 3 lives today, what have you done?"

The annual Blood Drive has arrived to Boone High and students were lining up and waiting to save 3 lives, or 6 babies. This year, FCCLA and NHS sponsored the Blood Drive and we saw kids helping out donors in many ways, either by registering them, giving them food and drinks or by helping them walk out after giving blood.

“I think it’s a great way to give back to the community, it’s another way to make the nation better.” The advisor for FCCLA, Ms. Beaver says. “We can make more students donate blood by telling them what it does and how it helps their people and it’s saving lives.”

NHS and FCCLA members had students and adults to sign up before the actual blood drive to reserve a spot to get in as soon as possible. When walking into the room, the music was heard all over, giving a lightweight feeling and even making the donors forget the fear that they might have from donating blood.

Team supervisor for the Boone Blood Drive says “I know how important it is to donate blood, we can get more students to donate by peer control, if friends see other students doing it and they come out just fine then that might motivate them to do it as well. The buildup is everything, they don’t know what to expect. We like to have fun here and put on music and lighten up the mood as much as possible.”

The students donating blood did not seem nervous at all, most of them were looking forward to it because it was their first time donating, “You save 3 lives, or 6 babies while doing it, so why not do it?” Harrison Smith, a junior at Boone High said. “It might be kind of scary, but it’s nothing you can’t get over and it’s for a very good cause.” Lindsey Schminke, a senior FCCLA member tells us.

So if you missed it this year, be sure to check it out next year, because one small step for you can save a life!

This semester, teachers Howe and Pomerank have many things planned for their students.

There will be an art show in May and a day long conference in April. “I love to see the creative things my students can come up with,” said Pomerank. Howe was also proud to admit she had a few seniors putting together portfolios for future artistic jobs.

Currently, Pomerank’s Pottery students are working on additive vases where they connect two coil pots and adding something descriptive to the outside. She spoke of doing subtractive work next which means they’ll be carving out of the clay.

In addition, Howe’s Painting class is working on mixing their primary colors. Every student in that class is responsible for painting a picture without using a single color straight from the bottle. Howe and Pomerank truly love what they do. "Working with the students and seeing them grow is my favorite part of teaching," said Pomerank. They spoke of how well the kids are doing even though we've had less class time so far. "The kids are doing wonderful, and I love being able to do a little of everything in each class."

Talk to your counselors about signing up for art next semester. Howe and Pomerank love to see new faces!

Inaccessibility to Printers Causes Problems Among Staff and Students

At Boone High School, there is an issue dealing with students not being able to access the school printers directly. This happening has concerned many staff and students including Mrs. Herrstrom: “I teach Advance Comp, it brings a concern for those students more than my other classes.” Students not having the direct access will change the way teachers deal with assignments and have to change the route teachers use.

With not being able to print, it brings issues also with students wanting to apply for scholarships. “With the scholarships, students will have to print information for the scholarship in order to apply to it.”

Another problem is dealing with extra activities outside of school. Students may need resources for those activities and Junior,  Liz Pfannes states; “Speech Team and TSA there’s paperwork and scripts that need to be printed out and a lot of people can’t do that at home.”

There are alternatives, but they are not as convenient. Students have to share their documents with their teachers but then the teachers have to print them and then pick them up with makes teachers have to add more to their busy schedule. Students can also print at the library but that will cost them some money.

The Boone High pep band has kicked off this year by playing at home basketball games and even a wrestling meet. Most students that are in concert band also have to take a responsibility to attend the games in order to preform. One junior student has had a positive experience with pep band. Anna Baldwin states; “I like pep band because we all work as a group, it makes me feel like I'm a part of something.” The pep band plays a variety of songs varying from popular songs to upbeat songs like “Mr. Brightside” to “Rock Lobster”.

With being a part of pep band it isn’t that challenging according to Sophomore, Kailee Hoover; “There aren't very many challenges associated with pep band, as it is pretty informal and we simply need to show up and be ready to play in order to participate.” The pep band will be playing at all the next home varsity basketball games which in January are on the twenty-third and twenty-seventh starting at 6 o’clock.

Honors English Opens New Doors for Literature Enthusiasts

The second semester of the 2014-2015 school year, sophomores have been offered an Honors English class which will help them get into Advanced Placement Literature and Composition as Juniors. Students had to write an entry essay on why they thought they’d be good for the class and how they will succeed in it. Approximately one-third of the Sophomore grade made it into Honors 2B for the second semester.

Honors English provides more of a challenge to students who are willing to take it. Students in Honors have higher level pieces of literature to read and comprehend, and have higher writing expectations as far as writing reflections and responses to assigned books, poems, or plays.

This is the first year that Boone High has offered this to sophomore. Ann Luong, sophomore, says, "It helps for the future in case you want to take more classes." She says this class opens more opportunities and that it is fun "because she challenges thrown at me allow me to see my potential in the English field." Emily Headley, sophomore, says, “Honors English helps me relate to the topics that we’re reading now. It’s awesome because we get to journal, which I like doing.”

Honors English is a great way to have students start off well in class early in their high school career. Students will learn about themselves as writers and learn the skills and techniques or literary analysis, which will open new doors in their career if they choose to follow the English path.
