The Boone High Library is promoting reading in unique and exciting ways. Their goal is to promote all kinds of writing and to inspire other students to share their thoughts.

The library is asking students to come to the library to be recorded about their favorite book or even books to be shown for other students to watch and see.

Many libraries have done this for years for promotional reasons. Boone did a version of this a few years ago and put it on their old website but wanted to open up the opportunity for students to do this again. The library will continue to do this until the end of this month.

Library staff Scott Keisel said,  “It would be nice to make this a regular feature they could run on BTV throughout the year! It would be nice if we could get as many students as possible to participate.  This way we can promote reading to a wide range of students.”

There has been over a dozen students that have taken part so far and they are expecting to get much more before the end of the month.

Boone TV will help the library with this by doing a segment. They are currently working on a new district library page that will have the videos available along with several other new features that not only benefit students but parents as well. This way the library can constantly update the videos on students that wish to talk about what they are reading.

The library staff is trying to promote reading with the brand new library we got this year. Stop in the library to be recorded about a favorite book.

One of the many clubs here at Boone High is FCCLA (Family, Career, Community, Leaders of America). FCCLA is a national career and technical organization that provides personal growth, leadership development, and career preparation opportunities for students in Family and Consumer Sciences education. The goal of FCCLA is to promote leadership skills and strong families through community service projects and activities. Being in FCCLA is a great way to meet new people, travel, and gain leadership skills.

FCCLA week is from February 15th to the 20th. It’s just a week where every school across the state promotes and informs their school about FCCLA. For this week, members of FCCLA are going to show their appreciation to the rest of the teachers by making them a special, delicious treat. There will also be promotional posters around the school for everybody to check out.  During advisee, there will be a competition between all advisees, and the advisee that finished the competition and gets to Laura Beaver’s room first will win a prize.

Sophomore and President of FCCLA Emily Braun said, “People should join FCCLA because it gives you a big opportunity to meet new people and give back to your community. My favorite part of being a member of FCCLA is the star events. Star events are something that happen once a year. You sign up for them, and what you do is you go present in front of three judges about something your FCCLA chapter has done, something you're passionate about, or something else. If you do good at districts you go to state, and then only a few members from there go to nationals. My goal this year is to good at state, so maybe I could go to nationals, because nobody from Boone has ever been able to go to nationals.”

Any students interested in FCCLA are welcomed to join. If anyone would like to join they can go talk to Ms. Beaver or come to a meeting. Meetings are on the first Wednesday of every month in the FCS room at 7:30.

Candidates Working for the Younger Vote

The Caucuses were just last week and the winner of the caucus for the republican side was Ted Cruz, on the democratic side it was Hillary Clinton. Why should students care about the caucus or even politics for that matter? The politicians this year have been trying to get the younger generation into voting.

The caucus says that around 84% of people under the age 30 would vote for Bernie Sanders, and 26% for Ted Cruz. Bernie has been talking about getting rid of college tuition, which has a lot of younger people interested in him. It was a surprise to a lot of people that Ted Cruz got the vote for the people under 30 and not Donald Trump.

People believe that Donald Trump lost a lot of votes because he didn’t attend the debate. For Trump only won the 65 and older age, receiving 27% of their vote. People like Trump because he is angry, he shows the anger they feel, that is one reason that people like Trump.

Students should care about the caucus and politics because that is what their future is going to be. Especially since some high school students are actually going to be able to vote for president in November of 2016. Marco Rubio won a lot of the counties that have university’s in them or colleges, winning the college graduates vote at 27%.

Hillary Clinton is talking about families and how she can help them. That appeals to young people because they all believe in having the families that they will have someday and want to be able to have them grow up being prepared for life and be financially safe. She is hitting at that to gain some younger people's vote.
