This upcoming weekend has been anticipated by this year’s juniors and seniors all year. With juniors busying themselves with decorating, Prom adviser Shannon Lumley’s theme of “Sequins and Bow ties” is sure to be a classy look for Boone High.

To begin the week, juniors have spent each day creating the decorations and determining where exactly each one should go and how it fits in with the theme. Juniors that did not sign up in advance, currently have an F, or have any un-served detentions, will not be allowed to decorate during the school day. By Thursday and Friday, juniors will have spent the last two days putting up the themed decorations up in the gym and auditorium.

On Saturday, the day of the dance, from 11 a.m to 1 p.m, the public will be allowed to openly view the junior’s work and how they have decorated and incorporated this year’s unique theme. Later in the day, students will gather for the grand march to which the public is also open to view. The march will start at 8:30 at night and will last a half hour. The actual dance will then last from nine to midnight. After prom will be held at DMACC and will last from midnight to four in the morning.

“I’m pretty excited for prom. If it’s going to be anything like homecoming or formal, I think it’ll be a good time. I’m also waiting to see how the theme is incorporated with this year, that’ll be interesting,” junior Darrin Waddell says.

On Sunday, May 1st, juniors who decorated are asked to come back and tear down all of their decorations. While the prom committee and some juniors are required to come, parents and other students are welcomed to help.

As many seniors are finishing their last semester of high school, seniors are also dreading the time for the big decisions they have to make. Senior Emily Westrum has her after high school plans.

Westrum plans to attend Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) in Ankeny for two years then transfer to Iowa State to major in Accounting. She works at Boone Bank and Trust currently and really enjoys dealing with numbers.
Westrum has ran track, played basketball and mentored through GRIP mentoring in high school. She has also participated in National Honor Society and Scholastic Honor Society. Her favorite memory is all the football games and homecoming week with her friends. She enjoyed dressing up for the spirit of homecoming.

Westrum said, “My advice to freshmen now is to respect the upperclassmen. I wished senior year away and it was probably the best thing that I could do, but I would recommend taking as many DMACC classes at you can because it benefits you in the long run.”

Westrum says, “I plan on giving tours for people visiting the Ankeny campus on certain days throughout the week. I picked DMACC because it saves a lot of money for the first two years that are pretty much the same wherever you go. I also have almost a full semester done so it only makes sense to finish because I have so many credits. My mom would be my biggest influence, she's a firm believer in good grades so she has pushed me to be the best I could be. She taught me hard work and dedication will pay off all it takes is a little time.

Westrum is ready to take on the real world and see what college has in store for her. As the year is coming to a close she is one of the seniors that is ready to get out of high school and move on to the next chapter.

Senior Eli Doss is doing something different after high school. He is planning to go into Basic Training for the army instead of attending college right after high school.

Doss plans to be a counselor at Hidden Acres Christian Summer Camp for his third summer and then in August to go off to Basic training in Fort Jackson, Mississippi. He plans to go to Advanced Individual Training (AIT) right after Basic and will learn to fulfill his job of a Blackhawk Helicopter Mechanic and crew chief in Fort Eustis, Virginia. He will return to Boone where his unit will be stationed. In the fall of 2017, he will attend Iowa State University where he is unsure of his major but will be focused on the Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Doss said, “I want to serve my home state, my country, and my God the best I can. I feel that it is to be in the military in the Iowa Army National Guard. So my motivation is following Jesus wherever He calls me to go. I have a desire to possibly become a military chaplain at some point in the future but it’s not for certain.”

In high school he has been involved in football, swimming, track, weightlifting, crossfit, choir, swing choir, band, jazz band, marching band, pep band, Legally Blonde Musical, student council, sophomore officer, junior officer, Student Body Officer, National Honor Society, National Honor Society Officer, Youth Group, Worship Team, and was a Worship Leader.

Doss explained, “I honestly cannot say what my favorite memory is but I’d say that anytime I was with a group of friends together, we were always able to find something goofy to do and just keep life light-hearted when it could potentially be heavy. I will definitely miss constantly being around the friends I grew up with.”

Doss said, “ My advice to all freshmen is push yourself! Go outside your comfort zone and you will grow more. Do not focus on being friends with everyone but focus on being best friends with a couple of people while then being friendly to everyone. My advice to the upcoming seniors is Enjoy the last year of high school because it goes quickly. Take advantage of every opportunity you have. Be the best example of a person and a student to those around you and under you.”

After high school, senior Kayla Williams will be attending Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) to continue her education. Williams plans to major in nursing in order to become a nurse in the Operating Room, Emergency Room, or in flight.

Williams added, “I have had 2 knee surgeries and seeing what the OR nurses do to prep and make sure everything flows well is fascinating. They have to be very organized, which I am. I have also been inspired by a family friend who is a Flight Nurse. She has told me all about it and I think the diversity from day to day would be perfect for me! Plus I love to fly!”

Williams has been involved in National Honor Society, 4-H, dance at Carol Renae Dance Studio, Choir, and band during high school.

Williams said, “I'll miss seeing my friends everyday! I'll also miss all of the sporting events especially football games! I am also excited to see what is in store for me and see what will happen after now. I have been inspired by many things.”

Williams advice to freshmen would be to take as many DMACC classes they can, as many elective classes they can, and be as involved as they can.

Williams advice for upcoming seniors would be to enjoy every last memory because they'll all be gone before they know it.

Many people are getting read to head off for college, and Williams has her after high school years planned out.

This year marks the last of high school for many students, many of whom will be going to college, and none who are more excited than senior Jenna Sundberg. With very few weeks left, Sundberg, along with other seniors, is excited to move further with their educations.

Sundberg’s exceptional academic career began in her middle school years, to which she accepted the Goeppinger Award for maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for at least three semesters in the four years of middle school she attended. After this, she had the confidence to stride to further lengths.

In her freshman year, Sundberg was a lineman on the football team, but was soon transferred to football manager after injuring her neck while playing. In the fall of the 2015-2016 school year, Sundberg acted as the co-captain for the Boone Girl’s rugby team.

This year, Sundberg became a member of the National Honor Society and was also inaugurated into the International Thespian Society. Sundberg was then able to work in the “I Hate Shakespeare”, “The Hobbit”, and “Touchtone M for Murder” high school play productions. Sundberg also had the opportunity to be the technical director for the middle school play, “Superheroes: With Great Power Comes Ordinary Responsibility”, to which she gladly accepted.

Sundberg also is and has been throughout her high school career in concert choir, chorale, and swing choir as a soprano. While in swing choir, Sundberg was able to grace the stage and sing a solo titled “Into the West”. Sundberg was accompanied by her younger sister, freshmen Hope Sundberg, on the violin, and Chris Truckenmiller on piano. While in choir, Sundberg has taken up many opportunities to go compete at solo/ensemble contests. This year, Sundberg decided to wrap up her high school music contests with a solo, to which she did well.

“No matter how hard your life may seem, see the good things in your life and cherish them.” Sundberg advices next year’s freshmen.

After high school, Sundberg plans to go to Professional Cosmetology Institute (PCI) Academy in Ames. While she’s there, she will get a lot of hands on experience and will fulfill her plans of getting her license in cosmetology. After she receives her cosmetology license, she plans on getting a license for massage therapy.

Most students at Boone High have probably heard of BooneTV and read a few of the online articles that the newspaper staff puts out on its website. Behind every writer of those articles is one editor who puts in the work to make the articles polished and clean. That editor is senior Baillee Furst.

Like most of the seniors here at Boone High, Furst is beginning to take her next steps towards her future. Furst has chosen to continue her education at Simpson College to give her experience in the field of journalism. When asked why she chose Simpson she said, “I chose Simpson because I felt comfortable on campus and they have a good journalism and English department.” Simpson competes in national competitions in both speech and mock trial, and Furst will be joining both teams in the fall.

Furst also decided to double major in multimedia journalism and English. She might also look into minoring public relations and political science.

Furst has been involved with Boone TV since her sophomore year, and says that leaving the paper is something that she is going to miss. “That’s the thing I’m sad about,” she said. “I’m going to miss the journalism class and the paper.” When asked what she is going to miss the most after leaving high school, she said, “I’m going to miss the journalism and English departments, especially Mr. Kramer and Mrs. Grotzke.”

Furst also has some advice for students who want to join and participate in Boone TV: “Join your sophomore year. You learn a lot of skills in writing in general, not necessarily just journalism.”

Good luck to Baillee Furst on her college adventure!

Carlie Romig, a senior at Boone High School, is involved in multiple school activities and is preparing for her next chapter in life.

“After graduating high school, I am attending the University of Iowa, taking prerequisite classes for pharmacy school, hopefully to get into pharmacy school for four years after that and then eventually become a pharmacist.”
When asked about what influenced her choice of college, Romig answers, “I chose Iowa because I wanted to go to a university, stay in state, and it was also the most recommended college amongst the community. My visit there also influenced my decision.”

Romig is part of National Honor Society and Scholastic Honor Society, and also a member of the volleyball and tennis team.

Romig became interested in pharmacy after taking the Des Moines Area Community College health class provided by the high school. “After taking the class, I was immediately more interested in medicines and helping the body. Also, after working in the Hy-Vee pharmacy for three months, I have confirmed my desire to be a pharmacist.”

Although saddened that high school is coming to an end, Romig had fun while it lasted, and is very excited to graduate and start a new, more exciting part of her life.
“My experience at Boone High has been very fun and helpful in choosing the next step of my life.”

Her biggest tips for other students in high school is to try to have as much fun as they can and do things that make them happy, which will lead to a better high school experience.

Heiller has been active all four years of high school.  She has lettered four years in cross country, danced on the drill team, been involved in student council, National Honor Society (NHS), and FFA. Out of school she has been involved 4-H and dance at Mary Jo’s Dance Studio. Her favorite part of high school was all the memories she made on the cross country and drill team. Heiller said that she will miss her friends that are going to different towns for college.

Heiller chose Iowa State University due to her interest in majoring in Animal Science and minoring in meat science and Spanish. She also chose Iowa State because of their agriculture program. She is looking forward to taking classes that will benefit her in her major.

Heiller is looking to join a sorority on campus. She is unsure of the other activities she will participate in, but she knows that there will be plenty of opportunities for her.

Heiller said, “I am ready to see what my life will lead to from high school. The only thing I am nervous about is that I will not like my major when I start getting into classes.”

Heiller has had many great memories in high school but is looking forward to seeing what Iowa State has for her.

On April 3rd and 4th, Family, Career, Community, Leaders of America (FCCLA) star event participants went to the state FCCLA conference. This year, Boone had three different groups go. Groups were in all different categories, including freshmen Anna Olson and Ellen Castle who competed in Illustrated Talk, sophomores Emily Braun and Gabie Osborn who competed in the Chapter Service display project and junior Tiffany Braun who competed in the Job Interview category.

The FCCLA conference started off with competitions on Monday the 3rd, from 9am to 3pm. After students competed in their category, students were allowed to go watch others present in their categories or go to other break out sessions to meet other competitors and have fun. Later on, after all the star events were finished, the two voting delegates from each chapter went to a meeting about voting to change some of the wording in the state rules. Boone’s voting delegates were Osborn and Emily Braun. Then students were let out for dinner and at 8pm all students went to back to the conference room to hear the speeches of those competing for state officers.

The next morning the two voting delegates, Osborn and Emily Braun, went to vote for the state candidates directly after breakfast. Then there were more optional break out sessions, so people could pick which one or ones they wanted to attend. Then the closing ceremonies started where all students who competed in the star events got to know how they did. The first group announced from the three Boone competed in was the Chapter Service project display. Osborn and Emily Braun not only received a gold, but were the top scoring group in their category, and qualified for Nationals. Then, Olson and Castle received a silver award. Finally, it was Job Interview and Tiffany Braun also received a gold and qualified for Nationals.

After Tiffany Braun found out she made Nationals she had this to say, “Ever since I found out about STAR events I have wanted to go to nationals. I am beyond happy that I get to share this experience with Emily Braun and Gabie Osborn, and I can’t wait to see how it goes. I as well as everybody else that came to state am very happy that our advisor, Laura Beaver, has allowed us to experience this and for all they help and hours she put into us when working on our projects. I definitely don’t think any of us could have made it to nationals without her.”

This year Nationals will be held in San Diego, California from July 3rd to the 7th. FCCLA will be accepting all donations to help pay for the trip.
