Lessons in Leadership

Mr. McPartland is teaching the class lessons in leadership for the second year this year. The class covers twenty different good traits of leaders. You are given a book, Role Models, for the class and each week you read a chapter. There are twenty chapters in the book, each chapter covers a person and what trait they represent. Every week a quiz is taken for the chapter and at the end of the week Mr. McPartland plays a movie about that week’s trait. The role models in the book range from people who lived during the civil war all the way to people living in the modern times.
Last year Mr. McPartland’s class had twenty-two students, this year there is only eight students. When asked Mr. McPartland said that he likes both class sizes. He liked how the bigger class could have more discussions but he likes that the smaller class know eachother more. He said that he likes teaching the class and likes how the curriculum is set up. Mr. McPartland said that he likes how it’s more of an upper level class and likes how they can have more mature discussions about values, morals and ethics.
The class was originally suggested by Dr. Johnson. Both Mr. McPartland and Dr. Johnson attended a seminar about the class and decided that Boone should teach it. They both had to decide how they were going to teach it and how many semesters it would cover. They finally decided that the class would be taught for one semester.

Boone High school’s most elect, and distinguished were honored at the National Honor Society, also known as NHS, induction ceremony, on Monday, September 29, in the BHS auditorium.
To kick off the event, Mr. Byam spoke to the crowd about the new generation of scholars being inducted. He impressed upon them their duty, and their place among their fellow NHS members. After, a few of last years’ inductees spoke, and told of their experiences and place in NHS.

They then lit the candles that highlighted the core values of NHS; scholarship, character, service, and leadership. After each candle was lit, a member read the definition and personal meaning of each candle. After the candle lighting, the induction of new members began, where each would take the stage to sign the book of current members.

Each inductee had their chance to be added among their peers, and now they will take part in current events, and future events, such as the sales during homecoming week. Members say to just wait and see what they have in store for us.It’s an eventful time of year for NHS as they induct new members and have their annual homecoming fundraisers. They anticipate a good year to come.

The plans for the new library are officially beginning. Boone High’s superintendent, Dr. Menard, will be leading the set up and design of the new library. Mr. Lance Wilhelm, director of media in the area education agency, will be helping him set up the “Media Hub”, as Principal Kris Byam liked to call it, in the library.
“We want the school to have a 21st century feel and give off an open and inviting vibe,” Mr Byam said. The plan is to give students chromebooks next year to use and study with for each of their classes. There will be sections in the library to plug in or to just relax in while they work on their class work. The library will be filled with all kinds of updated technology to help students feel accustomed to their surroundings.
The library will be a place where teachers can give their students a different environment to learn in, if need be. Everything will have a mobile effect to it, so the teachers can rearrange the tables and chairs to satisfy their needs.
Right now, teachers are cramped on space, not being able to move anywhere except into the hallway. Many teachers have to change up their curriculums in order to make them fit their surroundings. Teachers that would usually have students go to the library to get a book to freeread in their class now can only offer the books that they have in their rooms. This limits students choices, which can lead to them being forced to read something they don’t like.
Without a library, students have to sit in squarelike spaces, called pods, outside classrooms to use the computer. Which means that online students don’t have a place to quietly work.
The new library will be a great place for students and for teachers. “ I can’t wait for the new library and really hope they have my favorite manga!” said Sophomore, Rachel Lease. For now, everyone will just have to be patient.

Boone High School has a new Social Studies teacher this year, Mrs. Morley. She originally came from New York where she spent two years as a high school substitute teacher and spent four years teaching at Syracuse University. She moved to Ames this January and decided that she wanted to teach high school. She teaches psychology, AP psychology and American history. Some of her pet peeves are when students don’t respect the teachers or others. She also doesn’t like how students don’t check their emails.
Mrs. Morley said that she didn’t figure out that she wanted to teach until she was 23. She said that she likes to teach because it keeps her busy. She also wants to help high school kids get ready for college. She said that she likes Boone so far. She likes the historic homes and the focus on school. When asked what is her least favorite part of Boone, she said the trains and how she always get caught by them. She also said that Boone could use a coffee shop and a clothing store.
Mrs. Morley played in three different sports in high school soccer, softball and basketball. She also was in chess club and student government. In college she played soccer, founded a sorority and created a society for human resources. She had three jobs while she was in college barista, librarian and tutor.
When asked what she would do with a million dollars she said she would pay off college debt for her and her fiance. She would also pay off their house and buy a cabin on a lake. With the rest of the money she would donate to lung cancer, leukemia and breast cancer charities.

Quilling in Boone High

9/12/2014

By: Emily Headley
Quilling takes patience and time, and it is usually done to create a 3D effect. You take rolled up scrolls of colorful paper and glue them onto another piece of paper. When it comes to quilling, besides using strips of paper, the choice is up to you what the outcome will be. There are many possibilities and creations. Boone high’s craft class, taught by Mrs. Pomerenk, is working on quilling this week.
At the beginning of the year the class studied the history of crafts. You see, Quilling was started in the renaissance era; it’s a rich, cultural art originally practiced by Ancient Egyptians. The Quilling Guild started celebrating the International Festival of Quilling. They held their 30th Anniversary Celebration of Quilling on October 27th, in Liverpool last year. “Quilling expresses history,” Mrs.Pomerenk said.
Junior, Britney Bouk, decided to quill the John Lennon quote, “Imagine.” “Music is life. I really love John Lennon. And the simplicity of quilling combined with its extravagance is amazing,” she said.
Quilling can be simple or hard, depending on who you are, yet quilling can also be decorative and elegant.

Academic Team kicks it off

9/11/2014

By: Elizabeth Pfannes
On Thursday September 11, the Academic Team held their first practice of the school year. Per tradition, they kicked off the meeting with some snacks and goofing off. When they got down to practice it was a little rough going at first, due to the teams’ need for a program called questions unlimited. This is a system of quizzes and amazing trivia knowledge in multitudes of subjects, which is very valuable for the training of the team, and practice, and would be necessary to host any academic team even at BHS, as other schools do. Unfortunately, the program is hundreds of dollars, and just not in the budget. Though ruff at the start, once everyone got into the swing of it Team advisor, Peggy Watkins made the statement “ Prospects for this year are looking really good, we have some great returning students, and great new ones, who seem to have a real knack with random knowledge.”

Coming up on October 18, The team will be attending this years first competition at Algona vs Bishop Garagone and the surrounding schools in the area. Of the people who will be attending this competition, the A - Team is currently looking at being Emily Carey (team captain) Senior, Westen Powers, Junior, Liz Pfannes, Junior, Kalliee Hover, Sophomore, Kaitlyn Mellhosue, Freshman, and Edward Kivlahan, Freshman. Mrs. Watkins states “ Though our A-team is our best, it is looking as if we will actually have two excellent, strong teams The students all seem to have a really good confidence level. “

Unfortunately, due to Obamacare, and budget, the team will be taking school vans to the competition, rather than the usual school provided bus. A recent development for bus drivers requires no more than a twenty-nine hour work week, or a requirement of medicare. This has exponentially cut bus driving hours, because the school can not afford to provide these services. Academic Team is not currently a priority for the school’s allowance in the bus system of hours, which focuses more to the point of sports. Team advisor Mrs. Watkins will instead be driving one of the school vans, and has also asked a parent volunteer to drive the other.
