This year is the tenth anniversary of the Hope Foundation and shirts are being sold to help spread word about it. Boone High School students can buy these tee shirts in Billy Dow’s office. The tee shirts are being sold for ten dollars and are available in different colors. The shirts will be sold up until the start of the Hope Festival on December sixth.
The Hope Festival raises money every year for families in need within the Boone School system. The money is raised by a raffle for gift baskets. The gift baskets are made by the different departments of the Boone School staff. Each basket will hold whatever the department thinks is interesting. The Hope Festival will be held at the Boone County Hospital on December sixth.

Catherine Anderson, senior, plays lead female, Elle Woods, in the fall musical “Legally Blonde”. Elle Woods is a “dumb blonde” figure who follows her ex-boyfriend to Law School to impress him and try to win him back. The opening night for the play is October 31.
Catherine says that everyone in the play is working very hard, it’s been a bumpy road, it is all coming together well. As a lead role, she says she practices all the time. She says she’s watched the MTV version of the play “probably a million times.”
Catherine is absolutely thrilled to get the part, and she says it was also very strange because she wasn’t planning on actually getting it. She has state cheerleading the same day as opening night, but she is still able to do the play.
Catherine is also very excited because the dog in the play is going to be her dog. She says, “I am excited to work with my dog, Debutante, in the play. She’ll be definitely getting giggles out of the crowd.”
Catherine says we can expect to laugh when watching the play.

Welcome Natalie J’beley to Boone High

Junior Natalie J’beley is a part of Youth Exchange and Study at Boone High School this year. She came to Iowa from Israel to help Americans see that not all Arabics are like those in 9/11. “There are many differences between here and Israel,” she said, “I’ve been curious since I was 6 to see what America is like.”
“Ever since 9/11, many people are scared of Arabics, including people in my country,” she spoke of why she decided to come to America. She came here to change people’s views of who Arabics are and what they believe in. “My country is a beautiful place full of amazing people. Not all of us want war and think Americans need to be killed,” she stated.
A major difference she noted between Israel and America is the schools. Arabics are taught mainly about science and technology and are expected to choose a major by their sophomore year in high school. It is mandatory for them to begin learning English by 1st grade. Natalie actually started learning before even that. Her mother started making her go to a tutor to learn English right after she learned Arabic. “Even though Hebrew is technically supposed to be my second language, I count English as my second language because I speak it more often,” she replied.
She chimed in, “The diversity here is a major change for me, too.” In Israel they mainly just have Jewish and Arabs where she lives. “I actually have gotten to meet two Native Americans since I came here, “ she expelled happily.
J’beley loves being in America and experiencing the different cultures around her. She hopes to make many new friends and work at proving to people how kind hearted Arabs can be. You can see her in the fall musical Legally Blonde, Friday October 31st at 7 p.m. where she will be playing Chutney.

Positive Post-It Notes Make Impact

When Science teacher Shannon Lumley came across a news article online about a teen spreading positive messages around her school, she decided to adopt the idea and introduced it to Boone High earlier this week. Students from all grades have began posting small, uplifting notes on lockers and it has really taken off. Simple messages such as “You’re beautiful” and “Have a great day” are showing up all over the school, and it’s  making a large impact.
Despite some negative publicity last week, members of the student body weren’t going to let our school be defined by the choices of certain individuals. There are so many great things going on every day at BHS that go unnoticed. Principal Kris Byam gave a speech during Homecoming week, and in that speech he highlighted some of these things. We, as students, can either sit back and feel sorry for ourselves, or go out and do something about it. This is so much more than a few pieces of paper on lockers. This is a testament to how unified Boone High is and it shows that everyone has each other’s backs, even in flawed times.
“I was having a pretty rough day this morning. I went to open my locker and saw a note on the front. That note said ‘You’re awesome’ and my day quickly turned around. I realized that there are people out there that really do care about me.” said Sophomore Caden Burkamper.
This phenomenon is just beginning and you can expect it to grow as the year goes on. Get out there and create some notes of your own! In the words of Principal Byam, this truly is the Toreador Way.

Homecoming week was one of the best weeks in school year, but for most students homecoming Saturday was the best day in their school year.
From gorgeous girl with beautiful dresses to the boys. With the best music, a lot of dance, the results are a lot of fun. This dance was mostly exciting for the freshman, for which, that was the first homecoming dance, and for the seniors, for which that was the last homecoming dance. Although, sophomores and juniors show us how much they can dance. From 8 PM to 11 PM students were available to dance, and for sure they exploit that time.

Students and teachers love celebrating homecoming week. Online learning teacher Billie Dow said, “The homecoming assembly brings spirit into the school and leads all the students to participate.” They see it as a time to have a little extra fun in school. “Sometimes school seems a little boring once it gets going after summer. Homecoming is a fun way to put a bit of spark in the teenagers,” said sophomore Rachel Lease.

 Brayden Biersner

The male lead in this year’s musical, Legally Blonde, will be played by sophomore Brayden Biersner. Brayden plays Warner, a law school student who is followed by his ex-girlfriend, Elle, when he goes off to school. Brayden has never been in a musical, but he has been in a play. He’s never had a substantial lead role, so with this being his first lead role and musical, it is very exciting for him. Brayden says, “I am nervous about my solo/duet, “Serious”, because I’ve never performed solo in front of a crowd.” When he tried out, he didn’t try out for any specific part, so getting the lead role was a shock to him. He was, however, confident he’d get a bigger role because he’s been in play and he’s in choir.
In the storyline of the play, Elle’s goal is to win him back, but he had decided to break up with her because he needed to be sophisticated rather than date a “dumb blonde” kind of girl. Elle ends up attending the same school as Warner so she too can become smart and sophisticated.
Opening night of the play is October 31st at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.

Lip Dubbing it Out For Homecoming

10/9/2014

By: Emily Headley
Boone High has decided to make a lipdub, also known as a lip synch video, for a homecoming celebration on Friday, October 10th. The students will be getting out of school an hour early to videotape it. The seniors will be the ones to walk around the school and lip synch the song choices. The other students will be split up either in their clubs or in their 9th hour classes, if they aren’t in a club. Homerooms made posters for each club to hold up in their scene of the lipdub.
Seniors Hailey Osborn and Ellen Titman came up with the idea and brought it up with Boone High’s new Principal Mr. Byam. He loved the idea and thought it was a great way to create community at BHS. Hailey said, “Ellen and I thought it would be a nice way for seniors to say farewell to Homecoming.”
Some students and teachers, however, aren’t all that excited for this lipdub. The Bible Study students were a little upset that they wouldn’t be allowed to make a poster for the video. BHS Superintendent Menard said, “The separation of church and state, states that we can’t show proreligion in the school. I’m sorry.” A few students also think that the lipdub is just a waste of time. They believe we should be doing school work and not messing around with a video.
In conclusion, the students of BHS are very opinionated about the whole lipdub ordeal. Some are excited and can’t wait to see the finished product, while others just want to discard the idea all together. Which side are you on?
