Last week Mr. Wells Probability and Statistics class visited Franklin Elementary students to teach them some of the things they’ve learned over the semester; such as mean, median, range and standard deviation. High school students left their classes after fourth period and drove over to Franklin to teach for about an hour and a half on Thursday, November 20th and Friday, November 21st. On the second day, the High Schoolers were invited to eat lunch with the children and go to recess.

“I was gone the second day, but the first day was so much fun!” Senior Emily Carey confirmed. “Honestly they learned so quickly and really enjoyed interacting with the high school students. They really look up to us, and that made us all feel really good.”

Each high school student was introduced to a group of three or four younger students. Together that group would tackle a survey containing information that the fourth graders had previously collected. The high school students would help the elementary students find different sets of statistics on their survey and create different charts and graphs to show the information visually.

The classes consisted of about seventy students from Ms. Brittain and Ms. Hyatt’s classes. The students got out their crayons to color the graphs, and showed a lot of interest in what they were being taught.

“The kids had so much fun at recess. They were so excited to play kickball and tag, and run around on the play equipment!” said Senior Sarah Gustofson. “It was kind of weird going to recess again for the first time in six years. It was freezing outside but the kids didn’t mind at all. They grabbed our hands and lead us to the swings.”

Mr. Wells expressed great gratitude to his high school students the next monday, saying that he was so proud of them and how he could really see how much the Franklin students appreciated them. He said that after all the bad publicity BHS got earlier in the year, he was proud of the high schoolers for making the younger kids see that the high school can be a positive place.

Jazz Band held an informational meeting on Monday, November 17th at 3:30p.m., and officially started on Thursday, November 20th. They will be holding practices twice a week every week with one before school and one after school. Throughout the year they will have three concerts that anyone can attend. Chris Truckenmiller, Jazz Band’s instructor, said that students can still join by November 25th if they didn’t make it to the meeting.

Jazz Band will be performing in three concerts this year. The dates are January 19th, March 5th, and April 2nd, which is the last day of Jazz Band for the year. Students enjoy Jazz Band and getting to spend time with people with the same interests as them. “Jazz Band is a fun way to experience being a part of something plus it’s really cool,” said Junior Anna Baldwin.

“I love being able to goof around with the students and see them perfect a piece. It’s more personal getting to know each other in Jazz Band and it takes music to a whole new level,” Truckenmiller said about his leadership for the past two years.

If you still wish to join Jazz Band contact Truckenmiller via email, ctruckenmiller@boone.k12.ia.us , or visit him in his office by the band room in the music wing.

Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) held a meeting on Friday November 14th from four to five P.M. They discussed their annual fundraiser the “Geek Marathon” and made homemade wands. Students were given a pledge form at the meeting for raising money in the Geek Marathon. They would like for everyone to try and aim at raising at least 10 dollars.
The Geek Marathon is a fundraiser put on by Ms. Thieben, HPA’s director, and Mr. Kramer, the Gamers’ Club’s director. They raise money by having students go out and get pledges from friends and family. The money will be going to a foundation called Child’s Play that raises money to give children in hospitals toys and books. “It’s perfect, because they fit both of our groups’ goals,” said Ms. Thieben.
At the Geek Marathon students can spend a total of six hours “geeking out.” They will be holding a cosplay contest with a prize for the winner. The students can even take part in Boone High School’s own “Triwizard Tournament.” In the school gym the teens will be taking part in a “geeky” craft, trivia, a star wars dance off, and “muggle quidditch.”
Anyone who still wishes to take part in the “Geek Marathon” may talk to Ms. Thieben or Mr. Kramer in their rooms on the third floor of the “old building.”

Shelly Vanyo, a Boone High School science teacher, taught teachers from all over Iowa about wind energy Tuesday, November 4th, from 12 pm 4pm. Vanyo is Iowa’s wind Senator, so she trains teachers about wind energy in order for them to go back to their towns and teach students about the benefits of it.
During the meeting, some of the RET (Renewable Energy Technology) students helped with teaching the different teachers. They all worked together to create wind turbines, which greatly impressed the adults in the room.
Teachers were so impressed by how well Vanyo taught the students, they invited her to come to their schools and teach even more teachers to help spread the word of wind energy. Vanyo will be going to Iowa State University next week after school to teach and later on to Cedar Falls for a whole day to teach.
“This is just another step to Boone teachers and students changing the education in the state of Iowa,” Vanyo said.
You can hear more about wind energy and its benefits from Shelly Vanyo in room 2238.

As the Boone Toreadors start the 2014-15 boys basketball season, they look to turn things around. In the last three seasons, the Toreador basketball program has averaged five wins out of twenty-two games according to quickstats.com. Last season the Toreador basketball program introduced their new coach, Justin Baute, in hopes to bring more positivity and intensity to the basketball team, and brought back many returning key players.
The boys head coaching spot opened up after Joel Danner, a seven year head coach of the Toreador resigned. In 2012, Boone athletic director, Larry Moklestad was searching for a new coach for the suffering Toreadors. After many long months of interviewing and searching, Moklestad announced that Justin Baute from Kentucky would be taking over the program at Boone in hopes to turn things around.
As Baute enters his second year, he looks to improve from a 4-17 record from last season. The Toreadors officially start practicing for this upcoming season the 17th of November. The Toreadors first challenge of the season will be December 2, at Newton High School, according to the Raccoon River Conference.
Boone will be bringing back many varsity letter players. Daniel Anderson, a junior this year, will be a key element if the ‘Dors want a winning season. Anderson lead the team last year with 35 assists. Bailey Turner, a senior, lead the team with field goal percentage with 47.8 as a junior. Also Tyler Newbold, Jake Kraftcisin, Jake McBirnie will be in their last season for Boone and hope to contribute also.
