On Tuesday, March 30th, war veterans from the Freedom Flight visited Boone High to speak with a selected group of the student body. Boone faculty members Alicen Morley and David Schreiber organized the event and put in work to get the veterans together.
“Ms. Morley and I thought it would be great for the students to listen to stories and get to know the war veterans and having someone to share their experiences with had to feel good for the veterans,” said Schreiber.
The event kicked off with the National Anthem sung by senior Kassandra Foltz. Following the anthem, the men introduced themselves and said a few words about their time serving our country. After introductions, each veteran took their own table and students split up and listened to each tell their story. Vietnam War Veteran Roger Platt spent time in the communications field and spent a year overseas. Platt says he was honored to share his experiences with young students.
“It was nice for me to have kids to share my stories and experiences with, it means the world to me,” says Platt.
Many other veterans took time to tell stories including former Boone coach Dave Christensen. He served time overseas and had many tales of bravery to spew on the big crowd he attracted.
The event was very special and a big thanks goes out to Schreiber and Morley for organizing such an event.
