On Saturday, January 20 the Boone speech students traveled to Roosevelt High School to perform in multiple events in hopes of qualifying for State. Boone had eleven total events qualify for state. To be eligible for State the groups perform and they must be scored a division one rating by a judge.
There were three groups of Ensemble acting, where groups perform a five to fifteen-minute play, that qualified. There were two Choral Readings, where participants perform a story with a script and focus on syncing voice tones. There were three improvs, where the performers draw a random topic and are given five minutes to plan the performance. Also qualifying was a one-act play, a short film, and a solo mime.
There was a total of eighteen groups taken to contest, the other seven that did not advance got division two ratings. Out of those seven, there were three musical theatres, two radio news broadcasts, and one improv.
“The team’s success comes from two months of preparation in a wide variety of speaking and performing events.” said head speech coach Jill Isley. The teams get their performance material in late November and practice from then until the contest. The teams that qualify then continue to practice for the next two weeks until State. At State, the judges then selectively choose who advances on to All-State.
The teams will be working hard up until state which in on February 3rd.
