The Boone Scenic Valley Railroad coordinates events like Thomas the Train visiting Boone throughout the year bringing some High School students in to volunteer. Thomas the Tank Engine, a popular childrens icon, also does some traveling throughout the year. In fact, Thomas comes to visit Boone annually bringing over 3,000 people in and out of town in the duration of two weekends. Thomas the train visited Boone this year on September 13th and 14th, as well as the 19th and 21st.
Some volunteers like Senior, Michaela Lendt, Junior, Catherine Sikes, Junior, Desmond Hopkins, and Sophmore, Brandon Lendt have been volunteering since they were in middle school. “Seeing the kids faces smile when they get a Thomas tattoo, or just all the different people you get to meet throughout the year is always worth it” said Brandon Lendt. In most recent years, Senior, Britney Keeny and Juniors, Lizzy Ludwick, Mae Whitney, and Liz Pfannes have added to the High School volunteering crew at the Scenic Valley. “Seeing fresh volunteers is always great, we always need help and they’re very reliable,” added General Manager Fenner Stevenson.
There are several volunteer opportunities going on at the Railroad year round. The Scenic Valley Railroad is a nonprofit, educational, volunteer ran operation. In fact, without constant volunteer conductors, engineer, brakemen, and tour guides the fully functioning railroad would be a thing of the past. Although Thomas is gone the railroad will keep chugging along with over 5 trains heading out on weekends, the Scenic Valley is just getting started.
