Any person who is even remotely a fan of college basketball knows that this year’s season is a mess. Southern Methodist being the last undefeated team in the field of Division I basketball finally loss their first game in a matchup against the Temple Owls.

In the AP Top 25, the best ten teams in the nation have a combined record 167 wins and 26 losses. There have been five number one teams in the nation this year. It’s madness already and it is not even March.

There have been many surprising breakout teams such as the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Providence Friars, and the Indiana Hoosiers. There are some disappointing teams that we expected a lot from like, the Kentucky Wildcats, the Duke Blue Devils, the Wichita State Shockers, and the Louisiana State Tigers even with the Wooden Watch Player of the Year, Ben Simmons.

The most effective player in college basketball right now is Ben Simmons who plays for LSU. He’s averaging 19 points per game, 12 rebounds per game, and 5 assists per game. The player who has been really impressive is Kris Dunn from Providence College. His stats are 16 points per game, 6 rebounds per game, and 7 assists per game.

If you’re not a fan of basketball, I would advise you to start watching college basketball.

The Netflix television series “Making a Murderer” was released December 2015 and has become a huge success. The show features Steven Avery, a man who in 1985 got sentenced to prison and served there for 18 years for a rape he did not commit. On November 11th, 2005, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of Teresa Halbach. Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey, a mentally limited young man, is also charged with the murder of Teresa Halbach even though his story is different than Avery’s. We see how he tells the police what they want to hear, and how he is tricked into confessing to crimes he may not have been a part, because there is no DNA evidence at the scenes matching the young man.

The show is filmed over a 10 year period, and follows every detail of Steven’s story. The show is not narrated, but features interviews and first-person footage of real-life events. It is exhilarating, intriguing, thought provoking and gives you the chills. The show makes you question the criminal justice system, but also the ones who claim to be innocent. We see how the Avery family handles the whole thing, and their ups and downs. We see how evidence is weirdly discovered, the thought process of the defense as well as the prosecution, and how they handle things to get what they want.

Even though there are clues that point to Manitowoc Sheriff's Department being involved in the murder, the producers of the show have the power to include what they want to include, and make you view things from a certain perspective, so I definitely think there is more to the story than we see.

Personally, I think this is one of the best documentaries I have seen, and by far the most thought-provoking and disturbing one. I recommend it to everyone interested in crimes and justice.

The Deep Big 12

There have been #1 Kansas, #1 Oklahoma, #4 Iowa State, #6 West Virginia and the list goes on and on of Big 12 teams ranked in the top 25 this year. The Big 12 is arguably the best conference in division one basketball this year. This year’s crop of Big 12 teams is one of the deepest, yet unpredictable, conferences of the past decade.

On any given night, any two teams that play against each other in the big 12 can upset or lose a game. Many of the ten teams have been in the top 25 in the nation, some just missing. For example, Iowa State, a top ten preseason team, can lose to what now is a mediocre Northern Iowa team then turn around and beat a number one Oklahoma squad.

Teams such as Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Iowa State are what really makes this conference deep in my opinion, as Kansas and Oklahoma are the best two teams on paper, these three teams can win or lose to anyone in the conference. Many expected Kansas and Iowa State to be the top two, but with Baylor striving and beating many good teams on a five game win streak, they currently lead the Big 12.

What conference is next, honestly with the Iowa Hawkeyes starting 6-0 and beating Michigan State twice, it has dwindled the strength of the conference and stirred the pot of who will finally end up on top. ACC and SEC both having down years as Duke and Kentucky are both in the middle of their conferences with teams such as Clemson and Texas A&M being ahead of both.

The fact of the matter is the Big 12 is not only the deepest conference, it is also the best. With March Madness vastly approaching in the end the Big 12 will show out compared to other power 5 conferences.

The Need to Recycle

This year, I have noticed that we have tons of garbage cans around the new school. Granted, they keep the the school clean and nice, but what about helping out the environment? We have ten trash cans in one hallway, yet we can't recycle paper. We haven't recycled paper in two years. It doesn't seem like a big deal now that everything is online with our Chromebooks, but some teachers still use paper everyday and they use a lot of it.

I believe that we should make or have an exciting organization/class start recycling bins for paper. We have some for pop cans and other bottles that can be recycled. The only problem is we use more paper than we do any other recyclable product. So why don’t we have recycling for paper? Principal Kris Byam said, “In the schools that I have been at prior to Boone, the environmental science classes or a student group has done that. I definitely think we need to look into it!

I believe that we should have a student organization start a recycling program. They could get the boxes that we would put the recycling in or get recycling bins, and then one day of the week go around and collect. After that, they can take it to the recycling center here in Boone. We should try and help our environment as best as we can. Every little bit counts, so let us put our little bit in.

Pottery is an intriguing art form that has been an optional art class here at Boone High School for many years. It is a class that allows students to plan and create their own works of art and reflect on why and how they created it. The problem solving skills that students earn by taking this class taught in the visual arts can potentially provide high transfer value for later on in their life. But pottery class is much more than simply using your hands. By taking a pottery class, you will also go in depth on extensive pottery history, as well as learn intriguing facts about this riveting subject. There are a variety of both physical and mental benefits to be had from creating art, expressing yourself in a tangible way, and sharing something personal with the world.

Sarah Statz, a successful senior here at Boone High School, has taken pottery every semester since sophomore year. She recently started to further her pottery education by beginning her second semester of senior year with the school’s independent pottery study.

“I enjoy pottery because it’s a relaxing class. I find it stress relieving and I enjoy enjoy creating things out of clay. I feel like I have gotten the hang of the basics in pottery after the amount of classes I have taken. Even so, I still find challenges and I would say the most challenging part about pottery is the potter's wheel. I just haven’t gotten the hang of working it yet. In the future, if I have free time, I would love to take it in college.”

Find your inner artist by taking pottery for a semester, a relaxing, fun class that allows you to take a break from all the theoretical subjects.
