The Bullpen Needs More Bulls

As I spectated the senior night volleyball game Thursday evening, I noticed a significant decrease in the intensity of our student section that is titled “The Bullpen”. We celebrated senior night by doing the timeless theme of America night. Students put on their best redneck or patriotic attire they own and came to the gym to hoot and holler for their ‘Dors. I arrived at the match near game time and was able to snag a front row seat in the Bullpen. I understand that people have other things going on and that our volleyball team isn’t the cream of the crop, but our enrollment is over 600 people and we should be running the parents off of the bleachers.

Road football games draw a slim crowd as well. The football team is 2-6, but who doesn’t enjoy football Friday night and being with friends? As winter sports season approaches, we need to push one another to improve our attendance at basketball, swimming, wrestling, and all the other sports.

Last winter, the boys basketball team only managed 6 wins, yet I have fond memories of the Bullpen being involved as if we were the best team in the state. Our boys swim team is looking very promising this year and we should all pack the pool and cheer on the Boone boys. Let’s not discount our wrestling team. Although they lost a few seniors, they should be able to put on a show on the mats and we need to be there shouting and being supportive.

Let’s increase attendance at Boone sporting events and make people remember why we are called the Bullpen.

The End of the Traditional Schedule

This year the Boone High School has changed from its traditional two semesters schedule and is now running a quarter system. Under the new system, Boone High School quarters will last nine weeks, and the first quarter is ending on October 26th.

This was a change to mostly affect the system of physical education classes. Before, when Boone High was scheduled for two semesters, physical education classes (Recreational Activities, Strength and Conditioning, etc) were placed on students schedules every other day the whole semester. Now that Boone High is on a quarter schedule, students have their PE classes everyday for one quarter per semester. This change to schedule only affects the frequency of the classes since both schedules contain the same amount of days allocated for the class.

With theses changes to school year, some positives have already started to form. A positive that affects more busy students in the school year is that ability to have a study hall allocated into the student's schedule. Now sometimes students choose to fill their schedule with classes every period because they want to take advantage of the classes that are offered to them. Since students fill up their schedules, the only open period a student might have would be their lunch hour. Now that we’re split into quarters, some students who might’ve not had a designated hour to have study hall every day get the chance to experience a study hall without disrupting any of their schedule. This may allow for more opportunities for students to get work done, use the new library, or meet with a teacher.

The new quarter system has been a big change for Boone Highs’ school year. With every change there are positives and negatives, and so far I feel more positives have come from the change than negatives. Because of the changes it allows busier students to have an allocated study hall every day making it easier for busy students to improve their studies.

Multi Sport Athletes Experience More Success

Studies have shown that playing multiple sports will benefit you more than only specializing in one sport. The head coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes’ football team, Urban Meyer, doesn’t recruit players who specialize in just one sport. After taking the time to graph all of the players he recruits, he discovered that 42 of them played multiple sports in high school, and only fives of them only participated in high school football.

“It is important that kids don’t specialize in one sport early because kids develop at different ages. It’s also a poor decision to decide who the elite athletes are at a young age,” said the Strength and Conditioning Coach at Boone High, Charlie Eastlund. He also went on to say that, “You learn how to compete, win, lose, battle through adversity, and learn to play together as a team. You don’t get bored always playing one sport.”

There has been research about single sport athletes, according to Changing The Game Project, an organization focused on sports, children who specialize in one sport account for 50% of overuse injuries. Even when specialization is for the athlete, twenty percent of training time should be spent on a non-specialized sport. The study also says that if you play multiple sports, you’ll have better overall skills and ability.

College athletes took a survey made by the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, and 88% of them said that they had participated in more than one sport as a child.

As facts and coaches in Boone High School say, it’s better to play multiple sports than just specialize in one.

Every other day PE is more beneficial

Towards the end of 2014-15 school year, students and staff started discussing the possible block scheduling for the 15-16 school year. However, it was announced at the end of the year that block scheduling would not be happening. But that doesn’t mean there were no changes to this year’s scheduling. For the 15-16 school year, Boone High’s schedule has been broken into four (4) terms: two each semester. The only class this changes is Physical Education (PE). In the past, PE has been an every-other-day occurrence for students, but now with the schedule split into terms, it’s everyday for an entire term. A term is 45 days, so students have 45 days of solid PE and then 45 days off, allegedly.

The positive side? No student has to struggle with remembering what day they have PE or what day to bring their clothes. After interviewing two students, senior Shaylee Steffen and junior Kelsi Ball, they both came to the conclusion that the only positive is not having to know if it is an on or off day for PE class.

Despite the positive side of the situation, there is also a negative side. When a student has PE every other day, their physical activity is on a constant schedule for a whole school year. But with the term on/term off, a student only has physical activity for half a school year with long breaks in between: it just is not as consistent as it should be, and would be if it were still every other day. Most students have PE 1st and 3rd term or 2nd and 4th, which makes it somewhat even throughout the year. However, there are a few students who have it 2nd and 3rd or 1st and 4th. That makes it very uneven, having either 90 days in a row with PE or 90 days without. Shaylee Steffen is an unlucky student to have PE two terms in a row. She does not feel it’s fair that she has it everyday for two terms because everyone else gets a break in between. However, Kelsi Ball feels that it's still 90 out of 180 days, so it isn’t really changing anything, and that it makes it seem like it is going by faster. Ball feels it is unfair that students can’t take any other classes to fill the 45 days off. Steffen feels it is unfair that it’s every day because that means you have to wash your gym clothes every night, and it also makes people feel tired.

The overall consensus on this topic is that people would rather go back to having it every other day, and I think it’s obvious that the negatives outweigh the positives of the situation.

Recently a couple of rumors about next year's homecoming festivities and dances have surfaced. Things such as Winter Formal dance and Powderpuff have been rumored to be canceled next year.

A Boone TV staff member was able to catch Boone High School’s Principal Kris Byam and sit down with him to speak about all of these topics.

“We will wait until after the Homecoming dance to evaluate what the Booster Club wants to do,” said Byam talking about next year’s Powderpuff game. Byam, elaborated by saying, “Boone’s athletics all have legal liabilities. But the one thing that doesn’t fall under that branch is Powderpuff. Powderpuff is hosted by the Boone Booster Club, who does not have a liability claim. If something were to happen, say a division one athlete gets hurt, and loses their scholarship, the Booster Club can’t do anything about that.”

On the other side of things, if the game does get cancelled, Byam has a plan to not just completely take out the fun games and other things. Byam said, “If Powderpuff does end up getting cancelled, I want to do like what Ankeny does. It’s called “Under the Lights”. Basically it’s a night full of games and other stuff.”

Homecoming was also a point of interest. Rumors started spreading that the student body would have to wear jeans and a nice shirt, or dress more casually than now. That rumor was also shot down very fast.

The last thing that was brought up was the annual Winter Formal dance. “Student involvement is the biggest thing, if this dance is really popular, we will have it. But I don’t want to bring in staff if only 50 people are going to come,” said Byam. With that being said, there will still be a Winter Formal dance next year.

With regard to these and future rumors Byam stated, “Stop with the rumors, come talk to me. That is how the post game party started. Students wanted something to do after the games. Don’t be shy, come talk to me about this stuff.”
