BHS Students Unfairly Judged

This past week, student sections from Dallas Center-Grimes and Boone have been under scrutiny for their provocative chants toward Perry’s basketball teams. Some of these chants are alleged to have had racial undertones and others just poorly timed. As students in attendance at the girls district game on Saturday, we do not believe this level of press is warranted.

As this situation has come to light, we read an article written by reporter, Jeff Webster, from the Perry News. While Jeff makes a few valid points, he swings and misses on a majority of the editorial.

In Monday night’s double-header district game in Adel, the DCG student section could be heard chanting “Trump, Trump, Trump!”, evidently making a reference to Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s policies against illegal immigrants. While this itself was rather offensive and uncalled for, that’s really the only meat Mr. Webster has for this editorial. The rest is incorrect facts based on his opinion. He says what he wants to hear.

At one point, he says that Boone girls basketball coach Jim McPartland should have taken a break from coaching the game, went to the PA system, and told his own crowd to quiet down. This is a ridiculous expectation, as McPartland was obviously centering his attention towards the game at hand.

He also claims that the entire section was chanting that a Perry player “needed a wheelchair”. We can confirm that this was yelled by one single student, and he was quickly told that it was out of line.

Several noise makers were said to be “plainly and repeatedly heard”. However, he’s speaking about one kid, with a duck call, who used the duck call three times at a maximum.

Boone’s minor infractions were lumped together with the actions of DCG to create a seemingly bigger problem than there actually was.

If you weren’t at the game and you read Mr. Webster’s editorial, you would probably be appalled. It sounds disrespectful and ignorant for fans to act this way. And this is because the writer magnified the severity of it with his opinion. His scream for attention is actually going rather well, with his piece garnering a lot of attention. Mr. Webster went as far to call high school students “buffoons” and “immature clowns”. It seems inappropriate for an adult man to name call a group of students who are under age and are still in the process of maturing. He seems to be furthering the behavior he is so adamantly against.

It wasn’t the spectacle that it was described to be. We’d be willing to bet that most of the players and coaches were completely unaware of anything being said. It wasn’t even to the level that a member of the administration should’ve stepped in.

The bottom line is this. Mr. Webster magnified the severity of what actually took place by implementing his own opinion, and by writing what he wanted it to be. By writing what would be popular. He should be ashamed.

The Kate Shelley Krazies traveled to Pella on Tuesday night and were louder and prouder than ever; they plan to do the same this Thursday when the Boone boys face off against the Perry Bluejays at Johnston High School.

Duck calls are or ANY NOISEMAKERS ARE ILLEGAL AND CAN BE REASON FOR DISQUALIFICATION- minor infraction I think not might want to know IHSAA rules before stating in this article blatantly you violated them three times!!

We knew that they were illegal and that is why we politely told the kid to put it away. Either way if Perry moved on to play Pella, the same result would have occurred, Pella is headed to state.

Apologies. Meant to point out that there was only one noise maker, instead of several, and that it was used very little.

If we will be calling technicalities then I believe the posters used in pella should have called for disqualification or even the exceeded amount of cheerleaders. So Beverly, the way I see it IHSAA really doesn't care about these highly minor infractions.

The article written by Mr.Webster was clearly meant for those who had not attended the game. Anyone who did not attend the game should therefore worry about nothing but the outcome of the game. Otherwise all stories are only "hearsay."

I am from Perry, and I agree that it was uncalled for how our players were treated, but Jeff Webster is making a bad name for himself. I do not know why people pay to advertise on his website. I have tried to encourage several businesses here in town to keep their money because it is so disappointing to see some well known businesses stand behind some of his crap!

Well written article by a young teen. This is how it should have been handled unlike the derogatory opinions by Mr. Webster who is an adult.

I personally think that this has been taken to a contest on who is right who is wrong truth is perry will cheer for perry and Boone will cheer for Boone in this war of what happened Vs what didn't happen. Truth is being from perry myself you do hear a lot of racial comments around this time of year about it being mini Mexico and the different races that my high school carries , and graduating in 2014 I can tell you it still hasn't changed, last year students from DCG got on Twitter and made fun of all kinds of perry students and even made inappropriate comments too a student who preferred the same sex. Being a previous cheerleader and student in the stands our I can say our sports director sets rules on what chants are allowed to be chanted and what the the student section is allowed to do , things get competitive sometimes but the student section will get cut off before even finishing the chant and get told not to do it anymore , and to follow the rules of go home. This isn't a event just for student though, what the student body for all schools seem to forget about it that families and parents are involved to go watch their kids, grandkids or who ever it may be play, and as a fan I can tell you it gets annyoing from both perry and other schools who antagonize this , personally everyone needs to sit back and change something so the event can be good for both schools and the fans. While still remaining fun.

As a DCG student that was present that night, but was not in the student section, I would like to point out that both DCG AND Perry student sections broke the IHSAA rule on only good sportsmanship and not chanting against the other team. What most have failed to mention in all of this is that perry student section chanted "Little White D" while the Mustangs were playing defense during the 2nd half as well as some mustang students chanting "Trump." But that doesn't make any of this right. Both student sections should be ashamed that they BOTH broke rules set by the IHSAA. No one side is at fault here, and we can't blow all of this out of proportion. We are both great schools with great students, but we can't let a "teenage moment" define who our community and schools are. I beg that everyone will start acting like adults and own up, not just throw blame around. And if anyone wants proof of the chant, I will be willing to provide it.

I am a PHS student who was also there, also not in the student section. Yes, our student section did chant "small white d" but what was also not mentioned was that DCG chanted "big white d" first, and it was long before the Trump chant started, so it had nothing to do with it, although it was still inappropriate. The point is not that the rules were broken because obviously it happens all the time. Perry was not only upset about the chant but also about the blasts on social media, As well as the fact that we are often called "little Mexico" by not only DCG, but many other schools. perry is a diverse town and we are proud of it, so yes, it offends people when we are constantly reading and hearing racist the comments.

I understand the Perry community being upset about the racial comments, but the point of this article is that Boone did none of that. They were not racist in any way in their chants, yet they are getting the heat for it.

i don't get why we are the ones that are only being targeted here. This has happened more than once, yet there was nothing in about it in the news. Now a multitude of people are bashing dcg acting like we have been the only people that have done this.

The only reason it's being brought up is because of a certain person in Perry who felt the need to write about it. He felt the need to belittle Boone AND DCG. The BHS students are just defending themselves.

I think the students need to step back and hear what has been said at games and take owner ship of their behavior. I have been to many games and have to say that I know they have been asked to stop certain chants multiple times. Webster City game for example ,prior to all of this a parent complained about chants directed towards players. Stop getting so defensive and realize it is not ok. Become a better fan and student section by being LOUD and POSITIVE

Maybe what you all would like is that the students took care of the problem. How would you adults saying "you need thicker skin" like it if the perry high school students handled it with dcg students on their own. You grown ups are just defending these students. If you are in high school you should know you shouldnt be using any noise makers. If you use it 3 times it sounds repeating to me. All you racist parents are showing your kids the same thing your parents showed you. Way to go. Its 2016 people. Race shouldnt be an issue. And "trump" at a game..... Come on. I guarantee jeff isnt the only one stating names. I have some for you. And they are by far worst. I heard what my school mates where chanting and why they did it. You need to stop deffending them.

Greetings from Canada. You sound like racist apologists - more concerned with being labelled racists than with tackling a serious issue. It hurts to be called racist, doesn't it? So imagine how much worse it must be to face racism like the incidents at this basketball game every single day. It's a thought experiment the writers would do well to consider. Why should children tolerate a politicized atmosphere at their game? The adults supervising all of you should be ashamed.

At any rate, congratulations for making news up here. Alas, it does confirm an impression of the United States as a brutal, vulgar place full of privileged reactionaries who are slowly becoming a minority and taking it rather badly. A pity this anxiety is manifesting itself in such an ugly, racist, divisive manner.

Jenny, if you haven't read Mr. Webster's article I suggest you do. We did not chant racist things, however he tossed us in with DCG. That is the reasoning for us being labeled as racists. Students wrote this because they felt wrongfully accused.

You did use noise makers, you did yell at an injured jayette to "get up" referred to wheel chairs, claimed that "God made jayette a god made mistakes".. God doesn't not belong in any of your petty chants. As well as announcing starting line ups chanting you suck to each individual announced while the supervisor sat on his phone because he "can't do anything about it" as it was put. Air ball chants are apart of basketball nothing wrong there but have some respect during pregame announcements as well as possible injuries. If you don't want to be labeled as a poor student section then be respectful. Cheer loud, do you, even call out players all In good fun but do it with respect.
