Logan: a great but dark Marvel movie

What do you look for in a movie? Well, if it’s an old Hugh Jackman slicing people with his knife claws, then this movie is for you. Marvel’s newest masterpiece came to theaters last week and it is awesome. Logan is different than past Marvel movies, however. In this film, it really brings out the dark side, especially the bitterness in the character of Logan. It is an interesting way to convey Logan at this point in his life.

Logan is a movie about Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, as a much older and worn out Wolverine. In this movie, he is taking care of another X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier who is played by Patrick Stewart. They come across a little girl who is being chased by bad guys. Logan and Charles Xavier are pulled into this girls problems and are responsible for taking care of her and taking her to another place.

There are, like all movies, cons that need to be brought up. It is almost 2 and a half hours runtime, so that causes dips that aren’t as entertaining. I found myself wanting to see constant action which of course is unreasonable.   It should also be pointed out that the movie is a very hard “R”. It contains a lot of profanity and gore. Right off the bat, this becomes apparent, however, this did not detract from the enjoyability of the movie.

I was a big fan of Charles Xavier in this movie. I thought he brought a lot of character and deepness to the storyline. And of course, Logan was great in this movie too. It was very evident that he was sick and tired of being the Wolverine. He was very bitter and didn’t seem to like anybody.

Overall, I thought Logan was a great movie for those Marvel fans out there. It was a good personal story about someone who has had a dark life and is just done with it all. I thought the cast was great and it is exactly was I was hoping for when I first heard about the movie. In the end, I give it 9/10.

If you have extra time and are looking for a good Netflix show, look no further than the Marvel TV show Luke Cage. This show has something for just about everybody. Just the right amount of romance, mixed with some unreal action scenes. I definitely recommend this show to anybody who enjoys superheroes and action films. I will mention that this show contains explicit content that some viewers may not find suitable.

First off, the character of Luke Cage was first featured in the Netflix show Jessica Jones and later went on to get his own series on Netflix. He is played by Mike Colter and is a great character to watch. When he’s not on screen, all you want to see is him beating up street thugs with his insane abilities. He has skin that is essentially steel.  Match that with his superhuman strength and you have yourself one great character.

With every superhero, there has to be a villain. In season one, Luke has to go up against the most infamous gangster in all of Harlem, Cornell Stokes, a.k.a Cottonmouth. Cage goes through a lot of emotional torment as he fights Cottonmouth. We also see Cottonmouth’s background and how he came to be the way he is, which is a very interesting part of the series.

It is important not to look at this show as just a guy running around beating up a bunch of street thugs, because it does an exceptional job of developing Luke Cage’s character throughout. It is very unpredictable as well. I was left stunned multiple times throughout and I wasn’t able to successfully predict what was about to happen. I also appreciate the score of this series. There is a lot of classical jazz mixed with some modern hip hop to set the mood during some scenes and does a great job with it.

All in all, Luke Cage is a great show for just about any Netflix watcher. The only con I have for this show, is the downfall it has in the last quarter of the season. The beginning is very strong and intriguing while the last little bit introduces a character that I don’t much care for. I loved binge watching this show and am really excited for season 2 to come out. Marvel continues to impress me with their terrific TV shows and hope to see more in the future.

Trashing the New School

Last year, the new portion of the high school was opened up. Since the school opened the new section, they have brought in new furniture, repainted things, and gave the school a new environment than it had before. This school year, both students and teachers have noticed damage to the new furniture, new paint being chipped, and trash all around the school.

There are students who will climb over the new furniture in the commons, pick at the material on it, and do not treat it with respect. Once lunch periods are over, there is garbage left lying around all around the commons when there are trash and recycling cans spaced all over the commons. Many of  the problems that Boone High is having with furniture would be solved if students would learn to not climb over furniture or pick at the material. If students see damage to any of the new furniture, whether it be in the commons or in the library, they should tell a teacher. When a student has garbage, they should take it with them to their next class or wherever they go to next, or utilize one of Boone High’s many trash cans and their throw garbage away.

Teachers are supposed to monitor the different lunch hours to make sure students do what they are supposed to do and don’t mess around. Boone High needs to get more teachers on duty for lunch hours so they can better identify the students who leave trash around or the students who climb over the furniture. The students who are caught by teachers doing these things need to have some sort of punishment so it will stop, such as making the students who are seen clean the commons after lunch classes.

Boone High has a lot of trash and recycling cans in the school but students will just choose to ignore them. Every classroom in the school has at least one trash can and some classrooms have even more. The hallways in the school have several trash cans too, but somehow we end up with garbage throughout the school. Many students really don’t think about it when they don’t throw something away, but when many students already don’t throw things away, the numbers pile up quickly.  The trash cans are easily accessible so students should try and use them instead of leaving their trash wherever they are for someone else to pick up. Every little bit can add up to a lot quickly so let’s do our own job and throw our trash away. The student body needs to work as a whole to better the school.

Adventureland Park rewind

The Adventureland Park in Altoona, Iowa has been a part of many Iowa family traditions. With the removal and addition of attractions in the past and upcoming seasons, the park is sure to be an exciting journey during the fast approaching summer.

The Adventureland Park opened in August of 1976 and would have opened earlier if a tornado had not delayed the new park. On July 4th, 1978, Adventureland released its first wooden roller coaster, the “Tornado”. Within the first few months of its opening, it had been listed as one of the top ten wooden roller coasters in the world.

In 1979, the Adventureland park had purchased the Riverview Amusement park in Des Moines and moved some of the attractions to their own park in the far back. Within the next decade, the Riverview part of the park would be changed to “Dragon Island.” This change would soon make way for the brand new steel roller coaster “The Dragon.”

The next big attraction Adventureland would add would be in 1997. The 100-foot skywheel with over 6,000 bright lights that are recognizable to many Iowans today is still standing and is one of the largest open gondola wheels today.

In 2002, 8 million dollars were spent on the Park’s quick renovations.  The Adventureland Hotel was expanded by twice its size, added new pools, and a new first of its kind water ride called “The SawMill Splash”. The ride is now featured in the “Outlaw Gulch” portion of the park and was one of the first rides to guarantee to beat the summer heat.

2004 welcomed a brand-new ride towards the beginning of “Outlaw Gulch”. The ride is much like that of a giant pendulum that pivots back and forth at 240 degrees. Riders sit in a circle, all facing outward and are strapped in tight while they swing 360 degrees around at 6 stories high. This park ride was designed specially for Adventureland by an amusement park in Italy.

Starting in 2008, Adventureland started in on its most expensive expansion yet. In the far back of the park now stands Adventureland Bay, a large waterpark that includes 20 waterslides, Iowa’s longest lazy river, a swimming pool with a swim up bar, a 250,000 square foot wave pool, and much more! With it opening in 2010, Adventureland saw a flow of visitors come specifically for the water attractions.

This year Iowans will welcome yet another new steel coaster, this time replacing the old Log Ride, which was one of the originals from the park’s opening.  “The Monster” is now in construction. This ride will feature a 133 foot vertical lift hill, 5 inversions, a 101 degree first drop (which is steeper than any other in Iowa or our surrounding states), along with 10 “airtime” moments (moments where the passenger feels as if they’re lifting from their seat). The most exciting for the park, however, would be the first negative-G stall loop in the western hemisphere.
All of this will be on only 2,500 feet of steel track and will pass the Sky Ride 8 times.

With the past additions and new attractions this season,  Adventureland definitely is living in its hayday.

BHS Students Unfairly Judged

This past week, student sections from Dallas Center-Grimes and Boone have been under scrutiny for their provocative chants toward Perry’s basketball teams. Some of these chants are alleged to have had racial undertones and others just poorly timed. As students in attendance at the girls district game on Saturday, we do not believe this level of press is warranted.

As this situation has come to light, we read an article written by reporter, Jeff Webster, from the Perry News. While Jeff makes a few valid points, he swings and misses on a majority of the editorial.

In Monday night’s double-header district game in Adel, the DCG student section could be heard chanting “Trump, Trump, Trump!”, evidently making a reference to Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s policies against illegal immigrants. While this itself was rather offensive and uncalled for, that’s really the only meat Mr. Webster has for this editorial. The rest is incorrect facts based on his opinion. He says what he wants to hear.

At one point, he says that Boone girls basketball coach Jim McPartland should have taken a break from coaching the game, went to the PA system, and told his own crowd to quiet down. This is a ridiculous expectation, as McPartland was obviously centering his attention towards the game at hand.

He also claims that the entire section was chanting that a Perry player “needed a wheelchair”. We can confirm that this was yelled by one single student, and he was quickly told that it was out of line.

Several noise makers were said to be “plainly and repeatedly heard”. However, he’s speaking about one kid, with a duck call, who used the duck call three times at a maximum.

Boone’s minor infractions were lumped together with the actions of DCG to create a seemingly bigger problem than there actually was.

If you weren’t at the game and you read Mr. Webster’s editorial, you would probably be appalled. It sounds disrespectful and ignorant for fans to act this way. And this is because the writer magnified the severity of it with his opinion. His scream for attention is actually going rather well, with his piece garnering a lot of attention. Mr. Webster went as far to call high school students “buffoons” and “immature clowns”. It seems inappropriate for an adult man to name call a group of students who are under age and are still in the process of maturing. He seems to be furthering the behavior he is so adamantly against.

It wasn’t the spectacle that it was described to be. We’d be willing to bet that most of the players and coaches were completely unaware of anything being said. It wasn’t even to the level that a member of the administration should’ve stepped in.

The bottom line is this. Mr. Webster magnified the severity of what actually took place by implementing his own opinion, and by writing what he wanted it to be. By writing what would be popular. He should be ashamed.

The Kate Shelley Krazies traveled to Pella on Tuesday night and were louder and prouder than ever; they plan to do the same this Thursday when the Boone boys face off against the Perry Bluejays at Johnston High School.

Unhappy students on the dancefloor

The winter formal dance has been a debated subject after it was held on Saturday, February 6th. Some people didn’t mind the dance being in the commons, while others liked it better being in the gym. The DJ on the other hand, is also a subject widely discussed. Most people were not happy with the DJ at all, while others were somewhat okay with him.

The DJ is one of the most important factors if the dance turns out to be good or not. The music is what makes people dance, and it really makes the whole atmosphere. While some people say that the atmosphere becomes what you make it to be, which is true, the songs played are equally as important as students attitude. In this situation, most of the songs played were songs that were popular years ago, and even though students requested songs, most of them weren’t played. Sure, playing some older songs that everyone knows is okay, but most students want to listen to the songs that are popular at the moment.

Junior Lane Losh disagreed with the popular opinion and liked everything about the dance including the DJ, “He played popular hits that really got the legs going.”

Another thing that students missed besides good songs was the regular line dances; ‘Cupid shuffle” and “Cha cha slide”.
A suggestion to music at future dances is that the DJ plays more songs that are on the hit lists at the time of when the dance is held and is open for song suggestions. Another suggestion is that a poll could be made on twitter for example, where students could vote for the songs they would like and a list could be made and given to the DJ. Of course it is hard to please everyone, and there will always be people that aren’t happy with the songs played. But playing popular songs will make the chances higher that students enjoy the music.

Do you watch Boone Television weekly? Are you a good writer? Do you like to be informed? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Boone Television/ video production and journalism are the classes for you.

I am in journalism and from my experience, it is a great class and I would recommend it to everyone.

You will definetly enjoy being in the presence of Ben Bravard and Philip Kramer.

“Having more students would really allow us to offer more diverse content. Right now we focus a lot on news and sports stories, and having more students would give us more stories, and how we approach those stories,” said Kramer when asked why it is important to have more students.

There are two different ways that you could go. If you enjoy technology, acting, or even just public speaking, then video production is the route that you want to take. But if you like writing journals, or just writing in general, then Journalism would be the route that you want to take. No matter which class you take, you will love it.

Take it from a journalism student himself, journalism is very fun, interesting, and laid back. Just make sure that you write your stories and stay on topic. We want you to join Boone TV.

College Basketball Wreaks Havoc

Any person who is even remotely a fan of college basketball knows that this year’s season is a mess. Southern Methodist being the last undefeated team in the field of Division I basketball finally loss their first game in a matchup against the Temple Owls.

In the AP Top 25, the best ten teams in the nation have a combined record 167 wins and 26 losses. There have been five number one teams in the nation this year. It’s madness already and it is not even March.

There have been many surprising breakout teams such as the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Providence Friars, and the Indiana Hoosiers. There are some disappointing teams that we expected a lot from like, the Kentucky Wildcats, the Duke Blue Devils, the Wichita State Shockers, and the Louisiana State Tigers even with the Wooden Watch Player of the Year, Ben Simmons.

The most effective player in college basketball right now is Ben Simmons who plays for LSU. He’s averaging 19 points per game, 12 rebounds per game, and 5 assists per game. The player who has been really impressive is Kris Dunn from Providence College. His stats are 16 points per game, 6 rebounds per game, and 7 assists per game.

If you’re not a fan of basketball, I would advise you to start watching college basketball.

The show that gives you the chills

The Netflix television series “Making a Murderer” was released December 2015 and has become a huge success. The show features Steven Avery, a man who in 1985 got sentenced to prison and served there for 18 years for a rape he did not commit. On November 11th, 2005, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of Teresa Halbach. Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey, a mentally limited young man, is also charged with the murder of Teresa Halbach even though his story is different than Avery’s. We see how he tells the police what they want to hear, and how he is tricked into confessing to crimes he may not have been a part, because there is no DNA evidence at the scenes matching the young man.

The show is filmed over a 10 year period, and follows every detail of Steven’s story. The show is not narrated, but features interviews and first-person footage of real-life events. It is exhilarating, intriguing, thought provoking and gives you the chills. The show makes you question the criminal justice system, but also the ones who claim to be innocent. We see how the Avery family handles the whole thing, and their ups and downs. We see how evidence is weirdly discovered, the thought process of the defense as well as the prosecution, and how they handle things to get what they want.

Even though there are clues that point to Manitowoc Sheriff's Department being involved in the murder, the producers of the show have the power to include what they want to include, and make you view things from a certain perspective, so I definitely think there is more to the story than we see.

Personally, I think this is one of the best documentaries I have seen, and by far the most thought-provoking and disturbing one. I recommend it to everyone interested in crimes and justice.

The Deep Big 12

There have been #1 Kansas, #1 Oklahoma, #4 Iowa State, #6 West Virginia and the list goes on and on of Big 12 teams ranked in the top 25 this year. The Big 12 is arguably the best conference in division one basketball this year. This year’s crop of Big 12 teams is one of the deepest, yet unpredictable, conferences of the past decade.

On any given night, any two teams that play against each other in the big 12 can upset or lose a game. Many of the ten teams have been in the top 25 in the nation, some just missing. For example, Iowa State, a top ten preseason team, can lose to what now is a mediocre Northern Iowa team then turn around and beat a number one Oklahoma squad.

Teams such as Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Iowa State are what really makes this conference deep in my opinion, as Kansas and Oklahoma are the best two teams on paper, these three teams can win or lose to anyone in the conference. Many expected Kansas and Iowa State to be the top two, but with Baylor striving and beating many good teams on a five game win streak, they currently lead the Big 12.

What conference is next, honestly with the Iowa Hawkeyes starting 6-0 and beating Michigan State twice, it has dwindled the strength of the conference and stirred the pot of who will finally end up on top. ACC and SEC both having down years as Duke and Kentucky are both in the middle of their conferences with teams such as Clemson and Texas A&M being ahead of both.

The fact of the matter is the Big 12 is not only the deepest conference, it is also the best. With March Madness vastly approaching in the end the Big 12 will show out compared to other power 5 conferences.
