This year the Boone High School has changed from its traditional two semesters schedule and is now running a quarter system. Under the new system, Boone High School quarters will last nine weeks, and the first quarter is ending on October 26th.
This was a change to mostly affect the system of physical education classes. Before, when Boone High was scheduled for two semesters, physical education classes (Recreational Activities, Strength and Conditioning, etc) were placed on students schedules every other day the whole semester. Now that Boone High is on a quarter schedule, students have their PE classes everyday for one quarter per semester. This change to schedule only affects the frequency of the classes since both schedules contain the same amount of days allocated for the class.
With theses changes to school year, some positives have already started to form. A positive that affects more busy students in the school year is that ability to have a study hall allocated into the student's schedule. Now sometimes students choose to fill their schedule with classes every period because they want to take advantage of the classes that are offered to them. Since students fill up their schedules, the only open period a student might have would be their lunch hour. Now that we’re split into quarters, some students who might’ve not had a designated hour to have study hall every day get the chance to experience a study hall without disrupting any of their schedule. This may allow for more opportunities for students to get work done, use the new library, or meet with a teacher.
The new quarter system has been a big change for Boone Highs’ school year. With every change there are positives and negatives, and so far I feel more positives have come from the change than negatives. Because of the changes it allows busier students to have an allocated study hall every day making it easier for busy students to improve their studies.
