The Boone toreadors and Carlisle wildcats faced off last Tuesday night in Kate Shelley Field House. The toreadors looked to knock off the 14-1 wildcats. Boone kept up with Carlisle in the first half, with a half time score of 22-25 in Carlisles favor. The Boone girls showed some fight in the third quarter and took control of the game tying Carlisle, but with a strong defense in the final quarter the wildcats pulled away. The final score of the game was 40-36.

Coming off tough loss to Ballard four nights before the 'Dors looked to rebound with a win against Carlisle. The Boone girls held on strong in the first eight minutes. Meanwhile the Carlisle girls put in some quick threes and fast break takes to the bucket to give them an advantage in the second quarter. After just eight minutes the score was 17-13 Carlisle.

Boone showed up in the second quarter and outscored the wildcats. The Dors defense came up in this quarter by only allowing eight from Carlisle. Boone on the other hand put up nine. The girls went into halftime down by three.

Once again Boone came out ready to give shut down Carlisle. Toreadors freshman Claire Sandvig came in strong for the toreadors with points in the paint left and right, also senior Mariah McPartland was cleaning the boards for Boone. With only eight minutes left in the game the Dors tied Carlisle at 32.

Carlisle came into the game with only had one loss on the season. The wildcats scratched their way ahead and showed their dominant defense by only allowing Boone to four in the fourth quarter. Carlisle came up clutch in the end with a four point win.

More than forty girls this year are interested in joining the Boone High track team and were eagerly looking forward to this meeting that begins the season, with this kind of weather, we can feel the season starting!

The girls track coach Mr. Kiesel, started the meeting by giving the girls two white slips with motivational quotes saying “Most of the barriers we run into are because of the limits we put on ourselves.“ and “Don’t complain about the results you didn’t get from the work you didn’t do. “ to remind the girls why they’re doing it and how good they are. Mr. Kiesel did not leave anything out, from attendance rules until team pictures, which he insisted on having all of the team in them because he does not believe that anybody should be left out. Girls are more excited than ever to start practice which begins February 17th for runners and March 2nd for throwers. One of the coach’s main goals was to bring the team closer together and to make them a family,  he does not want anybody to feel like they are not a part of this team. With at least 4 girls that have reached second or first place in State competitions whom received certificates for at the beginning of the meeting. Mr Kiesel has very high hopes for this year’s  girls track team and he believes that the team will reach great achievements.

Mediocre Expectations

I sat on a cold bus ride home after another tough loss, and thought to myself, when was it going to get better? When were we going to develop a winning culture? I spent countless weeknights throughout my childhood watching Boone Basketball teams get outworked game after game. As far back as I can remember, Boone has been settling for below average performances in nearly every sport. Something has to give. And it starts with the mentality of the players. After yet another defeat at the hands of the almighty Carroll Tigers, I entered the locker room and overheard a couple of upperclassmen saying, "At least we didn't get blown out." That's Boone sports in a nutshell. Guys were talking about how cool of a dunk Carroll's star player had thrown down late in the game. They can't be serious right? They just got their asses handed to them for 32 minutes and they're going to talk about how cool of a play the other team had?

Maybe it's because none of these guys have ever tasted what success is like. And I don't think they're ever going to with that mindset.

The idea of this article is not to degrade anyone, or for anyone to be offended. It’s more of a call to action than anything.

Also, I am not saying that I have all of the answers. It’s going to take a team effort in order to begin to turn this ship around. And I think a majority of it is the mentality we have. The effort is there, but we need to find a way to correlate it from practice, to Friday nights.

The great Jim Rohn once said, “There are two types of pain you will go through in your life. The pain of discipline and the pain of regret.” There is no way I’m going to leave this school without doing something special. Without experiencing at least a little bit of success.

It's time for change. No more moral victories. No more messing around. Before I know it, I'll have a shot to go out and do something about it. To go out and leave it all on the floor and not be satisfied until we're winners. Because what's more fun than winning a championship with your best friends?

Paige Dighton is a senior student at Boone High School. She has done winter cheerleading for 5 years. When asked why she decided to do cheerleading she said that she loves being right there with her team and cheering with them. Her favorite part of winter cheerleading is that they all becoming a big family. Paige says that she isn’t planning on doing any kind of cheerleading in college because she will be too busy and she just wants to enjoy and be able to go to games and meets with all other the students. However, Paige will miss cheerleading in college, and being with her “cheerleading family”, and the most, she will miss being able to cheer for Boone High School. The next meet with her cheerleaders will be on Saturday, the 17th in Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Boone Girls Basketball from the Beginning

The end of the 2013-14 season was left up in the air of what could have been or what if or how we should have done. A senior dominated team last year had some promise with the help of Carrie Overland, Mariah McPartland, Serena Sandvig, and Dianna Slight. Many would say it was a decent season but when is Boone going to be above average? When is Boone going to be up there as a name brand team like Harlan or Carlisle? That question needs to be answered and I think coach McPartland can fill in those answers if he is allotted enough time to change the insane levels of the average ball club.

The Boone girls did put some work in over the summer, Sandvig and Slight is who I saw most of in open gym. A freshman that is on the rise who you will hear from by the time she graduates is Caitlynne Shadle. She already averages 5.1 points per game, Shadle brings some offensive firepower.

At the beginning of the season coach McPartland had to fill some crucial spots even though all the seniors from the class of 2014 did not start they played big minutes in each game. Leeds was the other start along with McPartland, Overland, Sandvig, and Slight. Coach had to fill in Leeds’ role along with two post players. His young players had to be successful so his team could compete and become above average. He had to put them in a system where they could strive and be consistent. I think he has the right formula because they are seven and four through eleven games and they have beaten everyone they were supposed to beat. Losing to Winterset was a bit of a set back but Mariah Criswell was a bit too much for his squad to contain. Winterset is a good team I say it was a step back because they were in complete control of the situation and it just slipped away.

McPartland is a good coach because he is evolving with the times, he runs a two-three zone and shoots the three exclusively. His daughter, Mariah, and Serena Sandvig get theirs on the block. The offense is ran to get Overland and Slight threes. It all makes sense he has changed with time, he did not get stuck in old ways to play basketball. There are one hundred different styles and combinations to play the game you must adapt to your players skill set. I think McPartland has done a very good job doing so.

This season has gone pretty well from the outside looking in, the team is seven and four and I think they might struggle with Ballard and Carlisle but if the zone and the team is shooting well that night anything can happen. The method to madness is get a driver, two shooters and two posts, the Toreadors have that. Lets say they get a really good draw for the playoffs, there is a good chance this team could really do something if the stars align right. Boone basketball will hopefully get to prominence, and hopefully it is at the hands of McPartland because he is coaching the right way and he understands his girls’. If he is allotted enough time the girls program will trend up, and Boone will be considered as a Harlan or a Carlisle and hopefully competing in Des Moines come late February.

The 6-4 Boone Toreadors took their talents to Carroll, Iowa to face off the 1-9 Carroll Tigers.

The Boone girls just came off a great with against a good ADM team a few days before and looked to continue their hot streak. The ‘Dors took off early and weren't looking back. The 1 half score was 49-13. The girls slowed down their intensity in the second half but still put up good numbers. The girls closed out the game with a final score of 73-20.

The ‘Dors started the game with Senior Carrie Overland, Sophomore Dianna Slight, Senior Serena Sandvig, Freshman Caitlynne Shadle, and  Senior Mariah McPartland. The Toreadors came out with high intensity by putting up 25 points in the first quarter and holding the Carroll girls to only 1 point.

Boone didn't slow down in the second quarter either. By racking up 24 more points in the second quarter the Dor increased their lead to 36 points, (the highest lead in their season so far). The Tigers were only able to add 12 points in the second quarter and needed to do something different if they wanted to make this game anywhere close.

By the IHSAA (Iowa High School Athletic Association) when a team lead the game by 35 or more the clock goes continuous until the lead drops under 35.

Throughout the whole second half the Boone girls lead by 35 or more leading to a quick half. The ‘Dors kept up their scoring ways by adding another 16 points and only holding the Tigers to just 3 in the third quarter.

The Toreadors ended the game by outscoring the Tigers. The final score of the game was 73-20, making this a team record for opponents points. Also this has been a season high for the girls.
