Boone softball had a tremendous season this past summer and junior Laura Anderson was a huge reason they nearly made the state tournament. Anderson was Boone’s catcher and she had a great batting average as well. She works tirelessly on perfecting her skills and has devoted most of her teen years towards her love for softball.

Anderson began playing softball at the age of 8 and instantly fell in love with the sport. She joined a club team called the Iowa Swat who played their games within the state of Iowa. After two years of playing for the Swat, she took the next step and signed on with Team Iowa Force. This is where she made many of her friends that she has today. Team Iowa Force traveled across the country for competition and Anderson got to see many places she wouldn’t have if it weren’t for the sport of softball. Later on, she began to play for Iowa Premier Fastpitch. She currently plays for them and has excelled as a player because of this club. This past school season, Anderson hit for a .333 average and had 2 home runs. She also produced 33 RBIs.

Many different people have influenced Anderson during her softball career. Her coaches are Greg Dickel and Mike Pritchard and they have had a big impact on her softball career. Anderson began to go to Iowa State to hit and catch with their coaches around two years ago, and that’s when her recruitment began. She continues to do that today, and that’s how Iowa State really got to see her and watch her progress over the years. Anderson says she enjoys the coaching staff at Iowa State.

“I really love the coaches and the way they interact and coach me,” said Anderson. “That’s when I realized that this is where I wanted to play college softball.”

Anderson has previously caught some interest from a couple of Division II schools, but her goal was always to play Division I softball, and she realized Iowa State was where she wanted to be. On January 18th, Laura Anderson verbally committed to play softball for Iowa State University. She will be able to sign her National Letter of Intent next fall.

Looking forward, Anderson looks to travel to California to participate in high level tournaments in the spring and fall. She has two seasons remaining with the Toreadors, and more big things are sure to come.

Boone Boys Prevail in OT Thriller

On Tuesday night, the Boone boys basketball team traveled to Carlisle for a crucial conference game against the Wildcats. Boone had lost it’s 2 previous games and the hope for a .500 season was fading. In their first meeting, Boone got a signature win in front of the home crowd as they beat Carlisle 74-55. Long range shooting was very important in that matchup.

In the first quarter, Boone got off to a very sluggish start defensively and Carlisle couldn’t miss. Lack of aggressive closeouts and energy allowed the Wildcats to have a long range party early in this game. Offensively, Boone was very patient and managed to get some inside scores from sophomore John Herrick. At the end of one, the score was 26-13 in favor of Carlisle.

Sophomore Trevor Van Pelt talked about the first quarter action. “Carlisle came out and made a ton of shots in the 1st quarter. But we kept fighting and chipping away,” said Van Pelt.

In the second quarter, Carlisle started the quarter with a long range 3 pointer courtesy of junior Max Evans. After that, Boone locked in defensively and limited Carlisle’s deep attempts. The Toreadors kept the Wildcats out of the middle and secured rebounds. Offensively, Boone began to heat up the nets sparked by junior Ethan Lewis and his 3 point expertise. Also, the Toreadors made it a priority to drive to the rim and convert their layups. Easy baskets propelled Boone back into the game and at the half the score was 36-31 in favor of Carlisle.

In the third quarter, Boone established their first lead. Early defensive stops allowed the Toreadors opportunities in transition and Carlisle was on their heels. The home crowd encouraged the Wildcats and they wouldn’t go away. Freshman Collin Lister got hot from deep and Carlisle regained their lead and held it for the remainder of the quarter. At the end of 3, Boone trailed by a score of 57-52.

In the fourth quarter, Carlisle went on a run and went up by 12 points and it looked very difficult for Boone to mount a comeback. Boone pulled out a series of elevator screens to free up Lewis and he put on a 3 point barrage to put Boone back in winning position. The score remained close and the game was tied up at 73 with Boone in possession. Coach Justin Baute drew up a play for Lewis, but he couldn’t free himself up for a shot. At the end of regulation, both teams were knotted up at 73.

In overtime, Boone got on the board first and took a 75-73 lead. Carlisle then countered with a layup and brought the game back to a tie. Carlisle was held scoreless and Boone got a monumental win over the Carlisle Wildcats by a score of 80-75. Boone moves to 6-8 overall and 5-4 in the Raccoon River Conference.

Senior Danny Anderson summed up the big win. "The whole team worked together. Whether we were down or had the lead we played with energy and effort and prevailed in the end," said Anderson.

Come out and support your Boone boys basketball team on Friday night as they take on the Bondurant Farrar Bluejays at the Kate Shelley Fieldhouse at 7:30 PM.

On January 30th, the Raccoon River Conference will hold the second annual “Team Up Against Cancer” event at the RRC Wrestling Tournament at Perry High School.

This time last year the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which is now officially the world’s largest blood cancer organization, was able to invest 74 million dollars into research fundings to find better treatments and cures for the thousands of people who fight lymphoma and myeloma in the United States. Within the last 60 years, the Society has improved patient survival rates drastically, which is what keeps the charity going. This year will be the same as last, as all proceeds will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The official mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's Disease, as well as myeloma. The charity is also in the works of trying to create a world without blood cancers altogether. They plan on doing this by forging partnerships with colleges that have medical research fields, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies which will help quickly develop new therapies for patients involved. The group will also continue raising with fundraisers, such as the upcoming one in Perry.

At the wrestling match, for every win, teams will be awarded pins to which parents, teachers, and friends may access the online form and pledge to the charity. If for any reason a supporter was not able or did not want to go online to pledge but still wanted to, they would be able to pledge a flat donation on behalf of their school.

Austin Excels At Next Level

Just two years ago, former Boone runner Chandler Austin took the state by storm, with many records falling in the process. Austin was a four-time state qualifier in cross country at Boone High, winning Class 3A state titles in his final two seasons.

He also qualified for the state track meet all four years of his high school career, winning four state titles. His time of 8:51.74 in the 3,200 meter was the seventh-fastest time in the nation in 2014.

Prior to his senior track season, Chandler committed to Oklahoma State University to run track and cross country on a scholarship. He ended up redshirting his freshman year. Austin then transferred schools and joined the Boise State Broncos track and cross country teams.

“After transferring from OSU to BSU, I know I am at the right school now. Everything is great here including the training, trails, and weather; everything a runner needs to get to the professional level,” Austin says.

Chandler ran his way to a 12th place finish at the 2015 Mountain West Championships, earning him Cross Country All-Mountain West Second-Team honors. He accredits some of his success and development to the coaching staff at Boone High.

“I had a great coach in Ben Tilus, who was a volunteer at BHS and who had the knowledge to get me to the next level. I give him a lot of credit, because without him I would not have known what to do. He knew, and I just listened and put in the work.”

With all of his success in high school, there’s definitely a lot of memories that come with it.

“My favorite memory would have to be winning the team State Championship my senior year in cross country. Also, as much as I can’t stand watching the race, losing the state 2 mile has been a big motivation for me to keep doing what I’m doing,” Austin recounts.

Stay tuned, because with Chandler Austin’s work ethic, more headlines are sure to come.

Boone Seeks Revenge on Conference Rival

The boys basketball team is looking to get back on track after a close defeat at the hands of Dallas Center-Grimes. They have a record of 4-3 in the Raccoon River Conference and are currently placed in 3rd. In the first matchup between these 2 teams, Ballard took off on a run after halftime and won by a score of 57-43. Senior swingman Jaden Moody filled up the box score with 21 points and 11 rebounds. His running mate, senior Kolby Jensen, scored 12 points, shooting 3-7 from the field. The duo were the only Bombers in double figures.

Boone’s achilles heel this season has been rebounding. They have given up a staggering 30 offensive rebounds in their last 2 contests. The main issue with Boone’s rebounding is their desire for the basketball. The other teams are craving possession much more than the Toreadors. Boone’s leading rebounder is sophomore John Herrick at 4.1 rebounds per game. Ballard is sure to crash the glass and it is very important that the Toreadors establish contact and secure the basketball.

Offensively, Boone needs to avoid a slow start. In the majority of games this year, the opposing team has gotten out to a 5-0 start or better. Boone needs to get the first basket and set the tone for the rest of the contest. Boone has gotten better in the turnover department, but valuing the ball is still a major key for the Toreadors. The Toreadors scored a season low 43 points in their last meeting against Ballard. Moving the ball from one side to another will fuel Boone’s offense and the paint will open up for driver's senior Danny Anderson and junior Tanner Schminke. Like every game, Boone must heat up the nets and maintain a steady scoring output if they want to get the W.

Make the drive to Ballard High School and support the Boone boys basketball team as they battle with the Bombers on January 22nd at 7:30 P.M.

On Saturday, January 16th, the Boone swimmers had a meet at Southeast Polk High School. The teams that competed were Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Des Moines East, Des Moines Hoover, Grinnell, Indianola, Waukee vs Southeast Polk. The Toreadors swam into 3rd place with an overall record of 23-5.

“I’m pleased with the results. Coming in third is very good against Waukee and Cedar Rapids Kennedy, which are a few of the best teams in the state.” Says senior swimmer Dakota Sherry about the meet.

The Toreadors placed 6th in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:50.81, 3rd in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.96, and 3rd in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:31.71.

Swimming coach Chris Mann is also happy with the results and says; “This meet is usually one we have circled on our calendar as one we use for a tune up meet for the end of season championships. I tried to get guys in events as close to the potential conference lineup as possible to try and see how they would perform. Lots of big teams at this meet meant for a lot of close races. Close races always provide everyone with some pretty great times. Throughout the day we had several guys step into some leading roles; Derek had a great second place in the 500 and he tied his best time. Nick had a couple really good nail-biter swims in the 50 and 100. He got out-touched by a hair in each race. We are looking forward to our last couple of dual meets so we can head into the conference championship on the 30th with some momentum.”
Come watch the boys swim their next meet tonight, January 21st at Southeast Polk High School.

On Tuesday, January 19, the Boone girls had their tenth consecutive win of the 2015-2016 season. The girls faced Newton at Boone High School. In the first quarter of the game, Boone had a strong defense holding Newton to two points, while still going hard on offense, scoring 13 points. During the second quarter, Newton snuck in five extra points, but Boone countered with 14 of their own, bringing the halftime score to 27-7, Boone holding a strong lead.

In the third quarter, Newton showed some new energy and took 11 points, while Boone scored only nine. However, Boone came back strong in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points, while Newton was held to nine. The final score of the game was 50-27. Sophomore Claire Sandvig was on her game with 12 rebounds and 16 points, tying for most points scored in the game by an individual. Freshman Madelyn Danner also scored 16 points. Together, the two scored over half of the total points for the game.

The girls record so far this season is 11 wins and only two losses. Coach Jim Mcpartland says, “It has been a very good season so far. The girls are working hard and trying to improve everyday. Our success is attributed to their hard work and unselfishness."  Their hard work and persistence has lead the girls to have one of the best seasons in years. The girls only have six games remaining in their season. Their next game will be Friday, January 22, 6:00pm at Ballard High School.

The Boone girls basketball team is 9-2 and has won 8 games in a row. The Newton Cardinals come to town and are looking to put up as fight against the red hot Toreadors. Boone is led by their height inside and young freshman guard Mady Danner. She uses her speed to push the tempo in transition and the rest of her teammates benefit from her presence on the court. Their winning streak is a product of their chemistry and collectiveness as a group. On the inside, sophomore Claire Sandvig is the leading scorer averaging 11.8 points per game and sends back 3 shots per game. Senior Rylee Claman is a good leader for this young group and she stretches the floor with her outside shooting ability. Another perk offensively is sophomore guard Caitlynne Shadle. She is extremely aggressive offensively and opens up shooters around the arc with her driving ability.

Defensively, Newton has multiple scoring threats. Senior Hannah Rhoads has attempted 53 three pointers and is sure to be firing against Boone. The Toreadors need to keep tabs on her and make sure to not let her catch and shoot. Senior Sydney Jenkins could hurt Boone from the free throw line. She constantly probes the paints and gets to the charity stripe. Sandvig needs to keep the Cardinals off the boards in order to give her team opportunities in transition.

Come out to the Kate Shelley Fieldhouse at 7:30 P.M. to support the Lady ‘Dors as they look to continue their historic season against the Newton Cardinals.

Boone Takes on Non-Conference Foe

The Boone boys basketball team faces a tough test on the road against Dallas Center-Grimes. The non-conference schedule has been exceptionally tough for the Toreadors as they are currently 1-3 outside of Raccoon River. Boone has had recent success shooting from deep as they torched the Carroll Tigers relying mainly on the 3 point jumper. They have had issues rebounding this season, but junior Lane Losh has taken the role as Boone’s primary rebounder. One thing that Boone needs to improve on is taking care of the basketball. On average, the Toreadors commit a staggering 14 turnovers per game.

Defensively, the boys need to key in on DCG’s star forward Doug Heritage. He is a big bodied senior who can exploit Boone inside the arc. Another key to DCG’s success is junior guard Trey Washington. He is a shifty guard who averages 4.0 assists per game and can dish out to anyone. It is very important that Boone defenders put their chest into Washington and make him beat them off the dribble. Help side defenders have to have their heads on a swivel in order to locate the shooters perched around the 3 point line. Senior big man Grant Shivvers is averaging 6.3 rebounds per game. Boone’s big men including sophomore Dresden Wilson and senior Maclane Moran need to establish contact with Shivvers and keep him off the glass.

Offensively, Boone had success in the half court sets against Carroll. This game could easily turn into a foot race if Boone attempts to speed up the game and shoot early in possessions. Washington is a speed demon and will most likely sprint past the Toreadors in transition. Boone needs to execute their half court sets and continue to heat up the nets from long range. Junior Ethan Lewis and sophomore Trevor Van Pelt can fill it up and the rest of the team needs to drive and look out for the 2 shooters.

Boone travels to Dallas Center-Grimes on January 19th in hopes of improving their non conference record. Tip off is 7:30 P.M.

On Tuesday, January 12th, the Boone High School Varsity Girls Basketball team played against the Carroll Tigers for their fifth home game of the season. Before the game, the girls’ record was 8-2, and they were hoping for another win.

The Toreadors started off strong in the first half of the game. As the Tigers had a hard time on defense, the ‘Dors made every shot they took. At the end of the first half, the Toreadors went into the locker room with a lead of 28, the score being 41 to 13.

After halftime, the Tigers slowly started to come back, but the Toreadors kept going with the same momentum and the Tigers just could not keep up. Sophomore Caitlynne Shadle lead the Toreadors, scoring 16 points. Just behind her was sophomore Claire Sandvig and freshman Madelyn Danner, who both scored 14 points. The Toreadors won again with a final score 67 to 31 making their record 9-2.

After the game, Shadle commented, “It was an all around great win. We played well together, worked hard, communicated with each other really well and had great defense.”

Sandvig and Danner have been two of the top scoring players on the team for almost every game so far this season. Sandvig has made just over 130 points for the team so far and Danner has made just over 120 points.

Make sure to come out and support the Girls Basketball team at their next game as they face the Perry Bluejays at 6:15 this Friday night.
