On Tuesday, May 24th, the Toreador Baseball team took to the field looking to spark light in a new season. They did exactly that taking the Winterset Huskies to 10 innings (11-10).

The starting pitcher senior Storm Wagner struggled in the early going but quickly picked it up. In the top half of the first inning, the ‘Dors gave up 4 runs, but bounced back in their half, scoring quickly and easily with 6 runs.

After stalemating for another inning, the Huskies added another 2 runs while holding Boone scoreless. In the top of the fourth inning, sophomore Dresden Wilson headed out to the mound. Wagner ended with three innings pitched (IP), five hits (H), two earned runs (ER), and two strikeouts (Ks). After the fourth inning the score was 6-6.

Winterset again jumped out to the lead by scoring two in the fifth and then holding the ‘Dors offense scoreless again. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh inning senior first baseman Dylan Appenzeller and the Toreadors went out and held the Huskies to no runs and left the score at 8-6 in favor of the Huskies. With Boone’s back against the wall, they came through and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh.

It looked like the fans were going to get more than they paid for because the Toreadors and the Huskies were heading to extra innings. Wilson trotted out to the mound for yet another outing. He held the Huskies scoreless for another two innings.

In the top of the 10th inning the ‘Dors gave up two runs off of three hits. Heading to the bottom of the 10th inning, Winterset had the advantage 10-8.

Magic had struck Memorial Park in the bottom of the 10th inning. Due up was sophomore Evan Appenzeller, senior Alex Carey, and senior Danny Anderson. Evan Appenzeller had a very timely hit in the second and first base hole leading off with a single. Carey had a base hit. Now with runners on second and third, Anderson was ready to go. He laid down a bunt and beat the throw to load up the bases with junior Tanner Schminke coming up. Schminke hit a grounder into a 6-4 fielder's choice and scoring Evan Appenzeller. Senior Nolan Newcomb then hit a fly ball to second baseman in the outfield scoring a run and advancing Schminke to second. Senior Drew Wilbur then stepped up to the plate and knocked one to right field. Schminke went from second to home and scored the winning run.

The winning pitcher was Dresden Wilson, he had 7 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, and 7 Ks.

The Toreadors rushed the field after a magical 11-10 win. They play again tonight. Wednesday, May 25th, at 7 o’clock. Come out and join the ‘Dors in a matchup against the Newton Cardinals.

Both the Girls and Boys Toreador track teams are at it again. On Thursday, May 12th, the girls and boys ran in Gilbert at the District track meet in hopes to extend their seasons. The girls sent nine events to the Blue Oval, and the boys sent twelve events as well.

For the girls state qualifiers, junior Diana Slight qualified in four events; the 100 meter dash (12.42), the 400 meter dash (57.78), the 200 meter dash (25.19), and the Long Jump (17’6”). Senior Claire Moline qualified in the 100 meter hurdles (16.19). Freshman Mady Danner is headed to Drake for two events- the 400 meter hurdles (67.86) and the Long Jump (16’6”). The Shuttle Hurdle team (1:09.23) also made it to state. This team includes Moline, Danner, junior Jada Wyrick, and senior Payton Lyons.

“Our shuttle hurdle team is going for the gold. We run barely a second behind Pella who is number one as of now. I hope to run a new PR in the 100 meter hurdles as well. As far as the 4x100 goes, if we qualify by time, our main goal is to PR. It's important to have clean hand offs, which is one thing we will be working on this coming week before state,” said Moline.

“I’m pretty happy with how things went, that’s for certain. We are going to fine tune some things like handoffs, starts, break lines for hurdles, and approaches for long jumpers. We don’t want to risk any injuries so we just maintain our level of fitness with some light workouts,” said Girls Head Track Coach Scott Kiesel.

The boys have twelve events headed to Drake Stadium. Junior Colbey Wadsworth took first in both the Shot Put (48’8.25”) and the Discus (139’). Senior Eli Hicks is a three event qualifier taking first in the 100 meter dash (10.99), the 200 meter dash (22.30), and the 4x100 (43.32). Members also in the 4x100 are senior Alex Vodenik, junior Kaden Sherrard, and junior Eli Johnson. Junior Lantz Reed captured first in the 110 meter high hurdles (14.66). Junior Devan Baldus was right behind him (15.37) stealing the other spot in the district, Baldus also claimed third in 400 meter hurdles (57.03) sending him to the big meet. Johnson seized second in the 200 meter dash (22.69). Freshman Tyler Casotti grabbed gold for the 800 meter run (2:03.74). The Shuttle Hurdle Relay (1:01.65) team of Reed, Baldus, sophomore Levi Wiggins, and freshman Brett Price took third and claimed their spot on Blue Oval.

“The competition was great and very competitive which gave me a good push to do my best. I'll be doing a lot of practicing one on one with Coach Smith this weekend and throughout the week to get ready for the big jump I'll have to make if I want to place,” said Wadsworth.

“I was very happy with how the team performed last night. We’re going to work very hard early in the week, and then taper off near the end for the meet,” said Boys Head Track Coach John Bachman.

The state qualifiers begin their pre-state practices this week as they prepare themselves to try and take the State meet by storm. The State meet starts on Thursday, May 19th, to Saturday, May 21st. Make sure to go support the boys and girls track team when they try to take the gold on the Blue Oval.

The Boys and Girls Track Team ended their conference season on a high point. On Saturday, May 7th, the ‘Dors track teams took home the Gold for the Raccoon River Conference.

The girls track team won their conference with a score of 140 points. The runners up were Carlisle and ADM scoring 119 points.

Junior Dianna Slight won the conference in three events, the Long Jump (17' 10.5"), the 100 Meter Dash (12.49), and the 400 Meter Dash (56.63).  Freshman Mady Danner won the 400 Meter Hurdles (1:08.69) and placed 2nd in the Long Jump (16' 11.5"). Senior Stefanie Davis placed 2nd in the Shot Put (37' 0.25"), sophomore Claire Sandvig received 2nd in the Discus (107' 0"). The girls track team also placed 2nd in four relays; the Shuttle Hurdle (1:07.34), the 4x200 (1:51.01),  the Sprint Medley (1:56.49), and the 4x100 (52.12).

Davis had a personal record in Shot Put, and Danner had a personal record in the Long Jump.

“Our goals for districts are to get as many events to the state meet as possible.  It would be nice to get 8 for sure but 10 would be great.  At the state meet we would like to finish in the top four as a team for sure and possibly bring home a trophy.  It would be great to be the state champs in 3-4 events,” said Scott Kiesel the Head Girls Track Coach about the district and state meets.

Kiesel was presented with the honor of being the Raccoon River Conference Coach of the year for back to back years. “The coaches in the Raccoon River Conference vote for coach of the year so it is nice to be recognized by your peers for your accomplishments.  I couldn't have done it without this great group of girls,” said Kiesel.

The boys also sat atop the podium with 101 points, in front of Carlisle with 99.5. Junior Colbey Wadsworth collected first in the Shot Put (49’9”) and second in Discus (142’6”). Junior Lantz Reed garnered first in the 110 meter high hurdles (14.59), freshman Tyler Casotti obtained first in the 800 meter run (2:06.7), and junior Eli Johnson placed second in the 200 meter dash (22.81). Senior Eli Hicks earned first in all four of his running events. He ran the 100 meter dash (11.18), 200 meter dash (21.86), in the 4x200 meter relay, and the 4x100 meter relay.

“The goal at the district meet is not to win, but to qualify as many events for state as possible,” said the Boys Head Track Coach John Bachman.

The boys and girls district track meet is this Thursday, May 12th, in Gilbert.

Senior Drew Wilber will be attending Dordt College to continue his baseball career after signing on May 3rd. He plans on majoring in Exercise Science.

Wilber is a three year letterman in baseball, two year letterman in football and played freshman basketball. He has also be involved in Orchestra, Excel, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Grace Youth Group, E-Free Youth Group, and SALT Youth Ministry. Wilber is unsure of what activities he would like to be involved in on campus. His favorite high school memory is state baseball and playing at Principal Park his junior year.

Wilber said, “I am motivated to be in this career due to my passion for teaching and fitness. I chose Dordt because I want to grow in my faith and Dordt is a great place to do that. I really felt they wanted me as a part of the baseball team.”

When Wilber was growing up, he had always dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player. Wilber is excited for making new friends in college. He is scared about paying for college and managing money.

Wilber said, “It felt really good to finally commit. It also relieved a lot of stress. My advice to freshmen it to get into the weight room, it will change your life.”

Best of Luck to Drew Wilber as he follows his goals after high school.
