The Toreadors dominated in the first set. They gained a commendable lead over the Bombers to begin the nights match. They were able to hold it through the end. The final score was 25-12. In the Toreador’s second match of the night the Bombers started off with a slight lead. The Toreadors managed to tie early on. They then took the lead over Ballard and won 25-22. Senior Mariah McPartland had a huge night for the Toreadors with 18 kills. Also, Senior Serena Sandvig had a big night with 9 kills. Senior Carrie Overland also helped the Toreadors succeed with 33 assists. Also, the other seniors on the Boone volleyball team include Bailey Schminke, Kara Johnson, Kayley Patrick, and Rachel Braun. Senior Carrie Overland says, “Our main goal as a team is to win conference and go to state.” Overland also states “We mainly need to stay consistent with our playing and keep working hard at practice on our passing and blocking. We also need to keep our energy level high no matter who we are playing in order to reach our goals.” The Toreadors next game is an Invitational at 8:30 AM Saturday, October, 4. lt will be held at Newton High School. The teams Boone will be competing against include Eddyville-Blakesburg, Harlan, Carlisle, Des Moines North, Newtown, Ottumwa, and Pella. Justin Elsner ![]() Coming off an 0-4 start to the season Boone needed to turn their season around for a chance at the playoffs. On Friday, September 26 the 0-4 Toreadors played the 3-1 Dallas Center Grimes Mustangs. Mustangs started the season with a commanding 3-1 start to get them back to the playoffs, which meant running through Boone, and thats what they did. The Mustangs left Boone one step closer to the playoffs with a final score of 45-27. On Dallas Center Grimes first drive they ran and passed down the field to get them into the 20. The Toreador defense stood up and was resilient and held them to just a field goal. Boone answered back with a 30 yard pass from Sophomore qaurter back Tanner Schminke to Senior wide receiver Jake Johnson who leaped into the endzone to get them their first lead of the game. Thmustang line ran through and blocked the field goal to give the Toreadors only six points.Dallas Center Grimes would come back out and put two more touchdowns on the board ending the first quarter. With Boone down by 11 points they needed to make something happen. The Toreadors rushed down the field, capped by a terrific catch by Junior wide receiver Daniel Anderson. Boone showed some fight, but DCG was too strong on offense. Once again they boosted up the score by two touchdowns making it 31-13. On the first drive of the second half Boone fumbled the ball and DCG’s picked it up to run it back for their fifth touchdown of the night which lead to 14 unanswered points. The Toreadors showed some fight in the end but wasn't enough. Boone is still seeking their first win of the season as they fall 0-5. By: Justin Elsner The Boone Toreadors started the season facing three teams in the top 10 and fell short to all of them. The Toreadors next challenge was the Perry Blue Jays. The Toreadors lead going into halftime but after a few touchdowns by Perry failed to make a comeback in the second half with a final score of 21-14.
Early in the first, half Boone’s Sophomore quarterback Tanner Schminke ran for his sixth touchdown of the season. After exchanging multiple punts back and forth, the Toreadors stormed down the field once again. Schminke broke through the line and ran fifteen yards for his second touchdown of the night. The Toreadors went into the locker rooms with a fourteen point lead. This has been the first time this season that they had the lead going into the second half. With the Blue Jays down by fourteen, they needed to start making a comeback if they wanted a chance at this game. Blue Jays quarterback, Will Whiton ran for a 65 yard run for Perry’s first touchdown of the night. With little time left in the third quarter, the Blue Jays struck again tying the game up at 14. In the fourth quarter, both team knew that they had to make a stand. After a few well executed plays by Perry, Whiton scrambled in for the touchdown to put them on top. Boone had one last drive down the field, but the Blue Jays took the ball back with an interception to end the game. Lane Losh ![]() The Boone Girls Swimming team notched a 5th place finish last weekend at the Bobcat Invitational in Marshalltown. Johnston, Lewis Central, and Marshalltown finished in the top 3 spots. Johnston scored 374 points as a team, while Boone had 150. The Toreadors knew the competition would be stout coming into the meet. However, they managed to put forth a solid performance. Boone started things off by finishing 5th in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 2:02.26. Freshman Haley Hall, Sophomores Maddie Santi and Erin Kokemiller, and Senior Kate Kokemiller were the members of the relay team. Sophomore Anne Marie DeVries won her heat capturing a 7th place finish overall in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 27.34. Later in the meet, Maddie Santi also won her heat in the 100 yard backstroke and received 4th place honors overall. Her time of 1:06.85 was a personal best. Junior Amara Austin has put in a lot of work since last season. She swam the 500 yard freestyle in 7:07.41, which is considerably better than where she was a year ago. “We have a great coach and going to every single practice has helped a lot. We also worked on technique a lot at the beginning of the season.” Austin answered, when asked what her keys to improvement were. The girls have an early morning practice at least three times a week, and their work ethic is definitely showing in the pool. Boone’s next meet is an invitational on Saturday, September 27th, at Des Moines Lincoln high school. By: Laura Anderson The Boone Toreadors boys basketball team has been putting in a lot of time over the summer and the remaining offseason. The Toreadors have participated in the Sunday leagues at DMACC. This last weekend, September 21st, they played two games, going 1-1. Boone beat the Des Moines East Scarlets 71-70, but lost to Cedar Rapids Prairie Valley 76-41.
The Toreadors and Scarlets were even throughout the game. Boone pulled through, winning 71-70. During the second game of Boone’s, Prairie Valley pulled ahead right away. Boone did manage to decrease the lead a little, but couldn’t manage to ge the win, losing 76-41. September 21st, is the final weekend the Toreadors will be participating in the Sunday League at DMACC. Along with last weekend, they played in four other Sunday weekends. They also have been lifting, working out, and doing pick up games during open gyms twice a week to improve their skills. Senior Jacob Johnson states his goals for the season, “Well first and foremost go out and win games. I’d love to see us in contention for a conference title, and then for the postseason just see what happens.” Johnson also says, “The thing we need to work on as a team is communication. Just being able to constantly let teammates know where were at and what’s happening around us, but I really like the way we are looking as a team.” By: Justin Elsner The Toreadors entered their third game of the season facing the Humboldt Wildcats, September 12, at 7:30pm. Humboldt running back Brady Ross had a standout game with five touchdowns and a two tackles on defense. With Ross having a dominant running game, the Wildcats defense stopped the Toreadors with the final score of 48-21.
With Humboldt's first charge of the game Ross ran in for a few yard for the touchdown. Later Ross did it again from the same distance. With one minute and twenty seconds left in the first quarter, Ross showed that he was serious by putting another seven points on the board. At the end of the first quarter, Humboldt was leading 21-0. In the second quarter, the Wildcats ran for their fourth touchdown of the night. Even though the Toreadors were down, they were still going to put up a fight. Halfway through the second quarter, Toreador Senior,Ashton Clemons, caught and ran for a touchdown, putting Boone on the board. With time winding down in the second quarter, Tanner Schminke threaded the needle to Clemons again. Going into the locker room, the Toreadors were down 14-35. Coming into the second half Ross ran in for his fourth and fifth touchdowns of the night. By this time, Boone really needed a miracle to come back and win this game. With little left in the game Junior Danny Anderson weaved in between Wildcats players to make the Toreador a little closer. In the end, Humboldt’s offense couldn't be stopped with Ross’s five touchdowns. The Toreadors took their third loss of the season and are still looking for their first win. By: Lane Losh ![]() Boone has had their fair share of hardships this year. They’ve been beaten in all three of their games so far and things aren’t going to get any easier. Sophomore Tanner Schminke was dealt a tough job in replacing last year’s All-District quarterback Alex Davis, but he has showed some poise on the field for being so young. They’ve also undergone a change offensively in terms of their game plan. Last year they enjoyed large amounts of success running the option offense, ranking 6th in 3A in rushing yards. However, Coach Mark Camenisch decided that a spread offense would be more suitable for his team this year. The Toreadors have attempted more passes this year than they did the entire last season. Last game, Senior Ashton Clemons went down in the third quarter with what appeared to be a knee issue. He is a game time decision this week against Perry. The defense has also been a weak point this year for Boone. They’ve given up 140 total points in their first three games compared to 169 all of last season. With Clemons’ injury, some young players are going to have to step up and make an impact on the defensive side of the ball. The Toreadors will travel to Perry this Friday, September 19th in search of their first victory. Perry is led by Senior standout Will Whiton, who has drawn interest from many division 1 programs around the country. Boone has been prepping for them all week and they should be ready. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 pm. Laura Anderson ![]() The Boone Toreadors defeated the Tigers of ADM in three short matches Thursday, September 18th.
