Senior Jackson Miller is ready to come back and make his mark on the Toreador football team after sitting on the sideline due to last years injury. Miller has been on the varsity squad since his sophomore year and has played a key role on the offensive line. With his high IQ for the game of football, he is looking to help his team get wins. He puts in the work on and off the field, and is committed to making himself better as an athlete and a person due to last years injury which left him out for the rest of the season.

Miller learned from his past season and injury to play to the best of your ability. “Go hard every play because you don't know which one will be your last.” said Miller.

He was sidelined all last year with a hip injury. He focused on getting back to 100% and spent his time in the weight room getting back to top form so he can fulfill his expectations for the football program this year.

He has many expectations for the upcoming season, “I need to do my job and put my best effort forth every day at practice.” said Miller.

There are lofty expectations for the team this year, As the Toreadors start the season 3-1, “I think we need to work as a unit and strive for 8-1.” said Miller.

He is a leader on the field, he keeps the beat going and makes sure the line does their job correctly, “We play more as a unit instead of individuals.” said Miller.

People look at him as a role model and leader. He’s shown others what it means to live everyday to your fullest because you don't know when it will all just disappear right before your eyes. Step out of your comfort zone because you might not get the chance to do things again.

“Don't expect anything from anyone. Because expectation, when not fulfilled, gives you pain. When you get something without expecting it, you get pleasure and happiness.” said Miller.

Jackson Miller is looking to continue his success on the gridiron and stay injury free.

The Boone Volleyball team traveled to Forest City this past weekend for an invitational. They played five total matches and came away with one win. The Toreadors faced some quality teams and had to overcome a lot of adversity. Boone had to adjust their line up due to an unexpected injury early in the day. Junior Jordan Trowbridge suffered an ankle injury, senior Allie Swanson commented, “ We had a teammate go down with an ankle injury early in the morning and had to switch the rotations up and it didn't stop us from fighting the rest of the day.”

The day started off against the home team, Forest City. The Toreadors started strong winning the first set. Forest City came out strong and beat Boone by 10 points in the second set evening the match at 1-1. Unfortunately, Forest City was able to tack on another game, thus defeating Boone.

The next game the Toreadors had to face a very talented Central Springs team. Boone played a hard match, not letting Central Springs get a dominating lead in either set. The first set was back and forth ending in a 25-19 Central Springs win. The second game went the same way with a close 21-25 loss.

Next up for Boone was Algona. The Toreadors came out hot winning the first set 25-19. Algona was able to come away with the next 2 sets, and claimed a 2-1 victory.

The Toreadors then had to face Spencer. Once again, Boone came out playing well, winning the first set 25-22. They were able to keep the momentum going into the second set.  Spencer played a hard game, but The Toreadors showed up to play and secured the win. Boone walked away scratch free with a 2-0 victory over Spencer.

Boone’s final match of the day came against Webster City. After a very long day the team had to deal with some fatigue, the match started off with Webster City coming away with a 28-26 win in the first set. Boone came back in the second set winning by 8 points and sending it to the 3rd set. Boone fought hard, but Webster City was able to come out on top.

The Toreadors had to face some challenges throughout the day, as junior Lauren Calkins said, “We had some struggles with some people getting injured, and we had to step up and fill the positions that were needed.”

Boone was able to play hard against some good teams and end the day at 1-4.

On Friday, September 9th, The Boone football team braced the weather and took on the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets. Coming off of a big win over Bondurant-Farrar, knocking off Iowa Falls-Alden would put them on the right track.

In the first quarter, The major play was a senior Tanner Schminke touchdown pass to junior Mason Hulse to put the Toreadors up 6-0. On the PAT, a bobbled snap resulted in a conversion through the air via Hulse. Boone was very successful protecting Schminke early on in the game. The defense rallied together and produced multiple stops in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Cadets got on the board with a 1 yard touchdown run. The Toreadors blocked the PAT making the score 8-6 in favor of Boone. The ground game got going as Schminke and senior Elijah Johnson ran the Toreadors down to the 1 yard line. Schminke busted through the defense for a touchdown making the score 15-6. That score remained at halftime.

In the third quarter, Boone’s defense maintained their energy and kept giving the ball back to the Toreador offense. Schminke lofted a dime over the middle to senior Kade Morain for a 23 yard touchdown. The score was 23-6 early in the 3rd.

Later in the game, Schminke ran in yet another rushing touchdown to blow the game wide open and secure the Toreador victory. The final score was 29-6 in favor of Boone.
