The Boone Toreadors Volleyball team entered their contest against the Lynx from Webster City with high hopes of winning and advancing to the regional final to face off against Sioux City Bishop Heelan. Boone played good through four sets and the game ended in the fifth when Webster City won three sets to two.

Boone came out very strong to start the match and got their first set win. The Lynx put up a good fight and gave the Toreadors a good run. The first set ended with a score of 25-22 in favor of Boone.

Boone kept the momentum going into the second set. They dominated at the beginning of the set and after a few great serves the score was 24-21 Boone. Webster City wasn’t ready to be done yet. They answered with three straight scores tying the set at 24. After a few rallies from both teams, Webster City won the set 34-32 and gained the momentum.

At the start of the third set the Lynx started 6-0. The Toreadors didn’t put up much of a fight for Webster City. The Lynx took the third set with ease.

Webster City started the fourth set fast but Boone wasn’t willing to be counted out. The momentum shift came late in the set when senior Jada Wyrick dove for the ball, jumped up and scored the point making it a 24-20 score in Boone’s favor. Boone quickly lost it as the Lynx came back and scored three straight setting the score 24-23. It didn’t alter Boone’s approach as they finished off the set 25-23, and tied the match at two sets apiece.

With this potentially being the final set of the year, Boone was fighting for their season and a chance to advance. In the end, the Lynx proved to be too much for Boone. The score of the final set was 15-9. Boone finished their season off 11-24.

The Boone Volleyball team finished the regular season and enters postseason play with a record of 11-23. Their opponent Tuesday, October 25 in Webster City will be the Lynx from Webster City.

The Lynx enter this matchup one game above .500 at 15-14. They’re coming off a dominant win against Storm Lake where they took the match in 3 sets.  Webster City is led by senior Taylor Schnathorst who has 242 kills and 19 aces.

This attack heavy Lynx team will be looking to take it to the ‘Dors right out of the gates.

Boone is getting a long rest in having played their last game in Bondurant-Farrar suffering a loss at the hands of the Blue Jays. The Jays successfully took the sweep but Boone is feeling confident about their next match with Webster City.

“I’m confident that our defense will go all out, going after every ball and that our offense will show up and hit some balls away,” said junior setter Jessica Lewis.

Head Volleyball coach Danielle Schmidt is hopeful about her team, “We have to show up and leave everything on the floor. We need to serve aggressively and attack their back row,” she continued “I’d like to see us return to the regional final and reach the potential that we’ve seen in practice.”

The matchup is set, the Boone Toreadors will square off against the Webster City Lynx on October 25th in the 2nd round of regionals.

Picture CAPTION: Boone’s defense lines up opposite of DCG. They held the Mustangs to 154 total offensive yards.
The Boone football team has secured their playoff birth and at least a share of the district 2 title. Dallas Center-Grimes came to town with hopes of securing their own share, but left empty handed as the Toreadors picked up a 21-14 victory. Boone’s defense energized the rest of the team as they gave the Toreador offense excellent field position all night.

In the first half, Boone built a 21-0 lead on the shoulders of senior Tanner Schminke’s excellent decision making. A Schminke rushing touchdown in the first quarter was the first score of the night making it 7-0 in favor of the Toreadors.

The defense made DCG struggle offensively as they held them to 154 total yards. The Toreador offense had the ball back in no time. Their next score would be off of a spectacular run by junior John Herrick. He managed to break two tackles and plow his way to the endzone for a receiving touchdown.

On their next possession, Schminke hit junior Mason Hulse on a beautifully executed wheel route for another score. That made the score 21-0.

Special teams played a crucial role as the Toreadors stuffed two DCG field goal attempts. The first was pushed wide right and the second was a botched snap. Junior Damon Clapper was forced to run around the outside and was stopped outside the endzone to end the half. The halftime score was 21-0 in favor of Boone.

In the second half, the Mustangs mounted a comeback. They managed to cut the lead to 14 on a connection from Clapper to senior Trey Washington.

The Toreador offense had some trouble and committed two turnovers giving the Mustangs tremendous field position. Late in the game, Washington reeled in another touchdown and cut the deficit to 7.

Boone would recover the onside kick and force DCG to burn their timeouts, but had to punt back to them with two minutes remaining. The Boone defense made their final stand and deflected a hail mary as time expired. Senior Elijah Johnson was the defensive standout as he finished with 15.0 tackles, 5.0 sacks, and a forced fumble.

Boone is 7-1 and travels to Webster City in hopes of securing the outright district two title. Webster City is riding a five game winning streak and has accumulated 3,100 rushing yards as a team this season.Their ground game should give the Toreadors all they can handle. Kickoff is on Friday at 7:30.

With a successful season thus far Boone girls swimming looked to continue their winning tradition with a senior night meet against Newton. With three seniors swimming for the last time in the Boone High pool they looked for a dominate performance and they had just that.

To start the night was the 200 meter medley relay, including seniors Madelynn Santi, Erin Kokemiller, Anne Marie DeVries and junior Haley Hall. They started the night with a win with a winning time of 1:56.30.

Kokemiller would go on to grab an impressive win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:19.20. Santi would place second with a time of 2:25.46.

Head coach Chris Mann had this to say about the meet, “Senior night is always full of emotions. Sometimes it has a negative effect on the performances, sometimes a positive effect. We were mostly positive swims.. Madelynn had 2 spectacular swims going 1:04 for the first time this season in the back, and 58.2 in her 4free split. Those two times are just off her taper times, so she is looking prime for conference/regionals.You could tell they were swimming with a little fire being their last swim at home. Erin had great races in her IM and 100 split as well.”

Overall it was a terrific meet for the girls and a much needed win on senior night. With that win the swim team is now 21-5 overall.

The Boone Toreadors will take on the DCG Mustangs this Friday night at 7:30 in a very important district game at Goeppinger Field. The Toreadors look to improve to 7-1 and remain undefeated in the district. The Toreadors are currently on a 6 game win streak, with their only loss coming in the first game of the season to the second ranked team in 3A, the Creston Panthers.

The Toreadors have been on a roll on both offense and defense lately as they have outscored their opponents 146-36 in their last four games. Senior Tanner Schminke has been efficient in the ground game and through the air as he has rushed for 721 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns and has thrown for 1007 yards for 13 touchdowns on the season. He is looking for more of the same against the Mustang defense.

The Mustangs come into Friday night's matchup with a 5-2 overall record and only one loss in the district. The Mustangs are led on the ground by their senior running back Nathan Brown who has rushed for 745 yards on the season for 10 touchdowns. On defense, junior Trent Carpenter leads the Mustangs with 57.5 tackles as well as ball hawking safety senior Trey Washington, who has 4 interceptions on the year.

The Mustangs have a very aggressive defense. “We should try to throw short quick passes and then incorporate our running game. We just have to have a balance within our offense to keep them guessing on defense,” said Junior John Herrick. Junior safety and wide receiver Mason Hulse also added by saying, “It’s one of the biggest games of the year for us so far. We just have to stay focus, play how we have been, and we’ll be in good shape.”

With a win the #8 ranked Toreadors will clinch a spot in the 3A playoffs.

PictureSenior Tanner Schminke rolls out of the pocket against Ballard. He finished the night with 4 passing touchdowns.
Boone football was riding a 5 game winning streak and came out of Huxley with a big win over Ballard. With a commanding 35-13 score, The Toreadors need to win 1 out of their last 2 games in order to finish in the top 2 of their district and qualify for the playoffs. Going into the contest, Boone was ranked 8th in class 3A with a 5-1 record.

In the first quarter, Boone had success on the ground with senior Kaden Sherrard and senior Elijah Johnson setting the pace and moving the chains. Senior Kade Morain has been a solid target for senior Tanner Schminke and has made the passing game very efficient. On the defensive side of the ball, Boone has been terrific at containing elite running attacks and the defensive line has been pressuring the opposition. Senior Lantz Reed and senior Devan Baldus are Boone’s cornerbacks and spend their night locking down opposing wide receivers. Late in the quarter, Schminke connected with Morain for a short touchdown. That made the score 7-0 in favor of the Toreadors.

In the second quarter, Ballard established the ground game and started to gain yards. Junior Hunter Wright had himself a night as he carried the Ballard offense. He was running hard and Boone had problems bringing him down. Wright bullied his way into the endzone for a 2 yard touchdown making the score 7-7. Schminke later connected with Morain for a passing touchdown. The defense held up once again and gave the ball back to the offense. Boone stalled out and Ballard had as chance to take the lead near the half. Senior Max Stoltz made a bad read and junior Mason Hulse took advantage with an interception to set up Boone in Ballard territory. With a minute remaining in the half, Schminke connected with junior John Herrick in the corner of the endzone for a touchdown. Schminke’s third passing touchdown of the night made the score 21-7 in favor of Boone at the half.

In the second half, Boone continued to assault the Bomber defense with their passing attack. Morain and Herrick led the Toreadors down the field early in the third quarter. Boone had a chance to put the game away, but couldn’t convert. Ballard’s ground game wore down the Boone defense once again and Wright capped off the drive with his second rushing touchdown of the game. Boone blocked the extra point making the score 21-13 late in the 3rd. A 23 yard touchdown reception for Herrick put the game away and the final score was 35-13.

Boone has now won six straight games and are one win away from clinching their playoff birth in district two. The Toreadors are ranked 8th in Class 3A and are looking to keep their winning streak alive. Boone faces Dallas Center-Grimes at Geoppinger Field this Friday. Kickoff is at 7:30.

The Toreadors will be traveling to Ballard this Friday to face the Ballard Bombers. Boone will strive to keep their 5 game winning streak alive. Boone is going into this matchup ranked 8th in 3A with a 5-1 record. The Toreadors are going to have to bring their best against the Bombers offense.

After coming off of a nice homecoming win, Boone hopes to keep playing strong defense that leads to a successful offense. “We will be watching a lot of film to prepare for the game,” said senior Colbey Wadsworth. Wadsworth mentioned the Ballard running game saying, “We haven’t really faced anyone with size and speed yet.”

Boone has been playing very well on both sides of the ball the past two games. Offensively speaking, they have been able to gain yardage in multiple ways. Boone’s run game has been very strong lately, lead by senior quarterback Tanner Schminke. The offensive line has been effective in creating space for the Toreadors to break off big runs. Just when the defense collapses on the run game, Schminke uses his arm to exploit the secondary. Boone’s prolific offense should gain plenty of yards.

The Toreadors have been able to keep opposing offenses by forcing 3-and-outs as well as turnovers. Boone has little to no weakness on their defense. They have a strong defensive line and an equally as strong secondary. The defense is held together by the middle line backer, Colbey Wadsworth. Wadsworth is leading the team in tackles.

The game kicks off at 7:30 in Huxley.

Boone Continues Winning Streak

PictureSenior Tanner Schminke scampers around the corner for a long run against Greene County. Schminke piled up 222 rushing yards on the night.
The Boone football team came into the game against Greene County with a 4-1 record and a #10 ranking in the Radio Iowa class 3A rankings. They were coming off a huge win over the Gilbert Tigers and were looking to keep up their success. A win over Greene County would give the team their 5th straight win and sole possession of 1st place in district two.

In the first quarter, both defenses held up as the offenses struggled to get things rolling. Boone’s offense was able to pick up a few first downs on short pass completions but wasn’t able to mount a successful drive in the first quarter. Senior Trey Tucker broke off a long touchdown run for Greene County, but it was called back on an offensive holding penalty. Near the end of the quarter, Boone was able to recover a fumble that set up their offense in opposing territory. At the end of the first, the score was 0-0.

In the second quarter, Boone’s offense became overpowering and too much for Greene County to handle. After the fumble recovery, senior Tanner Schminke ran the ball down to the three-yard line. Senior Kaden Sherrard finished it off with a three-yard rushing touchdown which made the score 7-0 in favor of the Toreadors. Boone’s next offensive series consisted of short completions and power runs from Schminke, Sherrard, and senior Eli Johnson. The Toreadors worked their way down to the 25-yard line. On 4th and 2, Schminke broke off a touchdown run, which was his first of the night making the score 14-0 Boone.

Greene County had a big offensive play courtesy of senior Logan Lansman. His 51-yard reception followed by a Boone personal foul gave Greene County the ball on the six-yard line. A defensive stand followed by a blocked field goal held the score at 14-0. Greene County struggled to tackle Schminke as his legs kept churning and gaining big rushing yards. Junior John Herrick came into the mix with a 37-yard reception. Schminke juked a few defenders and ran in for a 37-yard rushing touchdown, his second of the game. The score was 21-0 Boone.

Boone’s defense maintained their excellence and gave the ball back to the offense after forcing a 3 and out. The Toreadors next offensive series was Schminke continuing to rack up rushing yards. He gained 67 rushing yards in one possession and capped off the series with a passing touchdown to junior Mason Hulse. This made the score 28-0 in favor of the Toreadors. That would be the halftime score.

The second half was the same story as Schminke racked up more rushing yards on his way to a 222-yard performance including three touchdowns. Senior Kade Morain hauled in a 50-yard reception which led to another Toreador touchdown. Greene County would eventually find paydirt against Boone’s reserves and make the score 35-8 after a successful two point conversion. That would be the final score.

Boone picked up yet another victory to extend their winning streak. They also claimed the #8 ranking. The Toreadors hold sole possession of first place in district two. They need to win two out of their last three games to clinch their playoff birth. Boone takes on Ballard in Huxley on Friday. Kickoff is at 7:30.
