Tuesday night, December 13, the Boone Toreadors (1-3) took on the eighth ranked Grinnell Tigers (3-1) in a non-conference matchup. Boone came in led by senior guard Ethan Lewis and senior center Gabe Krafcisin, both averaging 10+ points per game. Grinnell was led by senior guard Sam Allen and senior forward Cade McKnight who combine for 50 points per game.

To start off the first quarter Grinnell won the tip and got a quick easy bucket. The Toreadors locked in on defense though, holding the high powered Grinnell offense to only 10 points in the quarter. The Toreadors also moved the ball well offensively getting a lot of open looks as they poured in 18 first quarter points.

In the second quarter the Tigers got to the free throw line frequently and started to cut down the Toreadors lead. At the end of the first half the Toreadors had a five point lead the score was 33-29 headed in the locker room.

The Toreadors came out hot after halftime as they went on a 11-2 run to start the third quarter pushing the lead to 44-31. The rest of the quarter went back and forth with the Toreadors ahead 58-47 to start the fourth.

Grinnell started the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run and cut the lead to 58-54. The Tigers pulled the game to within two, at one point with a score of 65-63, but the Toreadors were resilient and finished on a 9-2 run and won the game 74-65.

Lewis led the way for the Toreadors as he scored a career-high 30 points. For the Tigers the duo of Allen and McKnight combined for 47 of Grinnell’s 65 points.

The Toreadors are back in action Friday night at home against the Carlisle Wildcats in a Raccoon River Conference battle.

Boone Toreador girls and boys basketball will play a varsity doubleheader against the Grinnell Tigers on Tuesday, December 13th.

The Boone Boys basketball team’s six game homestand isn’t going exactly how they planned. The ‘Dors have lost their last two contests, and their overall record sits at 1-3.

The usually hot shooting Toreadors have been off from deep as of late. In their last two losses, they have shot just 26% from three point range (10-38). In terms of overall field goal percentage, they sit at just 39% (34-86).

Seniors Ethan Lewis and Gabe Krafcisin are currently the leading scorers this season. Lewis is averaging 13.3 points per game, and Krafcisin is scoring 12.5 points per game.

Junior John Herrick missed some early season action due to a foot injury suffered during football season, but made a large impact in the loss against Norwalk. He is expected to be in the starting lineup against the Grinnell Tigers.

On the girls side, Boone has been dominant and currently holds a record of 5-0. They are ranked #6 in Class 3A. They will face a tough test, as the Grinnell girls are ranked #5.

Junior Claire Sandvig leads the team in points, rebounds, and blocked shots. She has been an interior anchor for their early season success. Junior Caitlynne Shadle also plays a factor as she is averaging 9.6 points per game.

Sophomore Mady Danner has also been a force on the offensive end, as she is the second leading scorer for the Toreadors at 9.8 points per game.

A top 10 ranked girls matchup, as well as the boys team trying to get in the win column should make for a very competitive and rowdy night in the Kate Shelley Fieldhouse.

PictureSenior Ethan Lewis rises up over junior Garrett Sturtz in last year’s matchup. Lewis finished with 19 points on Tuesday night.
The Boone Boys Basketball team is coming into this season with an experienced group of players. They traveled to Newton on Tuesday night for their season opener. The Toreadors rely on their interior size to overmatch their opponents and brought that gameplan to Newton. Boone fell short and lost their opener with a score of 75-70.

Early in the first quarter, Boone felt the pressure of the environment and struggled offensively. Newton got out to an early 8-0 lead and forced head coach Justin Baute to use a timeout and rally the troops. Senior Ethan Lewis gave Boone their first basket of the season on a three pointer. On the defensive side, Boone struggled to lock up Newton’s main offensive weapons senior Connor Gholson and junior Garrett Sturtz. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 16-13 in favor of the Cardinals.

In the second quarter, Boone began to assert their size advantage. Senior Gabe Krafcisin had a great night in the post and scored 19 points on the night. His interior size drew in defenders and opened up the floor for Boone’s guards. However, Gholson and Sturtz continued to hit shots and prevented the Toreadors from taking a lead. Foul trouble became a factor for Boone as senior Tanner Schminke racked up 3 fouls before the break. At the half, Newton led Boone 30-27.

Boone came out slow in the first minutes of the second half and Newton gained their biggest lead of the night going up by 10. The Toreadors then got hot from deep and reeled the game back in. The Cardinals began to crash the offensive boards and got a few second chance buckets to maintain their lead through the third quarter. Putting the score at 54-50 through three quarters.

Newton’s crowd got to a deafening volume in the fourth quarter and put the pressure on the Toreadors. Lewis hit his stride and did a terrific job of managing the offensive tempo, but the Cardinals were able to maintain their single digit lead. Sturtz shouldered the offensive scoring load for Newton. The game appeared to be out of reach until the Cardinals received a technical foul with 30 seconds left and a score of 73-65. Lewis was also fouled on a three pointer and stepped up to the free throw line for five shots. He converted all five to pull the Toreadors within three and with possession. Lewis was unable to make a three pointer in the closing seconds and Newton came away with the victory 75-70.

Boone hosts Winterset on Friday night in the Boone High School Gym with hopes of getting their first win of the season. Tip off is 7:30 PM.
