Going into their July 24th showdown with Humboldt, the Toreador baseball team needed just one more win in order to advance to the State Baseball Tournament in Des Moines. The same reward also lingered for Humboldt. Through the first three and a half innings, Boone was held scoreless with only one hit. They were going to have to turn things up a notch. After a couple of fielding miscues from the Wildcats, the ‘Dors managed to score two runs in the fourth. Junior Danny Anderson then belted a double into left-center field bringing two more runs across the plate. Boone now held a 4-2 lead and the home crowd approved.
However, this was no time to relax. Humboldt came into the contest boasting a 24-7 record, and they were a force to be reckon with. In the fifth inning, the Wildcats managed two hits and nearly loaded the bases. But the Toreador defense held strong and stifled their efforts.
Senior Jake Mallas was firing on all cylinders from the hill. After two more innings of stout defense, the Toreadors held on for the win. They were headed to the State Tournament at Principal Park.
“It was because the defense made great plays behind me,” Mallas said of his complete game effort.
Boone would advance to play Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the first round of the State Baseball Tournament.
