Toreador baseball took the twenty minute trip over to Ames in search of a big win on Tuesday, June 11th. Boone had already notched six wins on the season, but they were in search of a victory against a strong team that would get them on the map.
In the opening inning, the Little Cyclones struck for nine runs and jumped out to an early 9-1 lead. In the third inning, Boone responded with three runs of their own, and then rallied to score another four in the fourth.
In the fifth inning, they were able to completely dig themselves out of the early hole they had gotten in, with four more runs coming across the plate. The Toreadors then found themselves clinging to a two run lead after five and a half innings. They didn’t spend much time with their heads above the water though, as the Little Cyclones were able to push across a run in the fifth, and then again in the sixth.
The score was even at 12-12 heading into the visitor half of the seventh. Three hits and one run later for Boone, and a scoreless home half of the seventh for Ames, was all that was needed. The Toreadors had defeated Ames 13-12 on their home soil.
Sophomore Tanner Schminke closed out the game on the mound in the seventh. “The win over Ames was big, and gave us a positive mindset for the rest of the season,” said Schminke.
Boone was now 7-3 on the season and had momentum heading into the core of their schedule.
