Last Friday night, the Boone Toreadors headed to Humboldt with a (0-2) record trying to get their first win of the season against the (0-2) Wildcats. The Toreadors are trying to bounce back from a 3 point loss to the Gilbert Tigers. The Wildcats are also trying to come back from a loss against Garner-Hayfield. Both teams were trying to fight for their first district win.
The first half of the game was intense. Junior quarterback, Tanner Schminke, and Senior wide receiver, Danny Anderson, were clicking during the first half. Schminke aired out 4 touchdowns to the veteran receiver. Sophomore kicker Jackson Smith went 3 for 4 on PATs which lead to Boone having a 27 point score at half. The Wildcat offense was too strong for the Toreador’s defense also putting up 27 points by half.
The second half was brutal for the Toreadors. Humboldt’s defense was solid, intercepting 6 of Schminke’s passes. Devon Clark added a fumble recovery to the list of turnovers that happened in the second half. Colton Monson lead the team with 4 interceptions which were returned for a total of 46 yards. Clark also tallied an interception that was returned 76 yards for Humboldt’s final touchdown of the game. Boone’s offense failed to put points on the board in the second half, along with Boone’s defense allowing 23 points to be added to Humboldt’s score.
Top players of the game for Humboldt were quarterback Drew Thomas and linebacker and receiver Devon Clark. Thomas threw up 265 yards with 4 passing touchdowns. Thomas also ran for 207 yards and landed in the endzone twice. Devon Clark had 6 receptions for 79 yards and made 1 offensive end zone appearance. Clark also had 2.5 tackles, 1 interception for a touchdown, and a fumble recovery. Top players for Boone were Tanner Schminke and Danny Anderson. Schminke put up 342 yards passing and 4 touchdowns, as well as 6 interceptions. Schminke also added 6.5 tackles to his stats. Danny Anderson had 9 receptions for 261 yards and 4 touchdowns. Anderson added 3.5 tackles to his outstanding performance as well.
The game had a nail biting first half, but Boone just couldn’t hang on to the Humboldt Wildcats, losing 27-57. The (0-3) Toreadors will be back in action next Friday night as they host the (1-2) Perry Bluejays.
