On February 9th, the Boone girls basketball team traveled to Carroll to defend their early season win at Boone. On Tuesday night, the girls did more than just defend their win, they tore the Tigers apart with a 78 point difference at the end of the game.
The Toreador girls started the first quarter out for blood. Sophomore Caitlynne Shadle couldn't miss when she put the ball up from behind the arc. She sunk four threes in the first quarter alone, giving the girls a quick lead. Sophomore Claire Sandvig demonstrated some tenacious aggression on defense, keeping Carroll from coming inside the paint for short shots. Boone held Carroll to a meager four points during the first quarter while putting up 35 of their own. Starting off the second quarter, the Boone girls showed no mercy, bringing the heat, the girls put up shot after shot, scoring 29 points. Carroll couldn’t get past Boone’s defense, and were only able to score one point all quarter, a free throw. This brought the half time score to 64-5, with Boone holding a 59 point lead. At this point, the stands were at an uproar for the Toreadors to beat the school scoring record of 80, which was set previously this year in the girl’s home game vs Greene County.
Following halftime, the girls went back in to do some damage. The third quarter went similar to the first half, With Junior Diana Slight putting up three pointers and Madlyn Danner pushing some fast breaks to go in for quick layups. The score for the quarter was 18-3 bringing the total to 82 - 7. After a short pep talk from the coaches, some new players were sent in for the final quarter of the game. Sophomore Lauren Calkins sunk in a three pointer, and Sophomore Faith Lawrence came in for a few buckets in the paint. The girls had mercy on the Tigers during the final quarter, allowing them to score fourteen points. The final score of the game was 90-22, though a disappointment that the girls did not break 100, they did however demolish the school scoring record by 10 points. Senior Mallory Erb commented on the game “ The combination of our persistence on offense, along with an impenetrable defense gave us an unquestionable advantage over Carroll, and lead to our new scoring record.”
The girls have one game remaining in their season vs Perry on February 12. The current record for the girls is 16 wins with on 4 losses. Currently, this is the best season the Boone girl’s team has had in the past ten years for overall wins vs losses. Coach Jim McPartland said "Tuesday was a really fun game as the girls shot well, were very unselfish, and overall had a solid performance. It has been a great season. The girls continue to work hard in practice to try and get better everyday." Last year the team had 15 wins and 8 losses, comparatively, the girls have taken the school by storm this year, pushing for a win at each game.
