As the regional meet approaches, the Boone girls swim team is amped up for the opportunity to qualify for state. Last weekend in Grinnell, Boone broke four school records in the 400 free relay, 100 breaststroke, 200 IM, and the 400 medley relay. Boone claimed a second place finish in the Raccoon River Conference. Coach Chris Mann says the team has big goals.

“Our main goal is to continue to drop time. This is most of our teams last meet so we hope it can be our fastest meet. The way we have been swimming in practice I think we will be able to achieve a lot of our goals. I am hoping the girls have a lot of fun together for one last time,” said Mann.

The regional meet will be highlighted by the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams. Member of these teams are juniors Ann Marie Devries, Erin Kokemiller, Madelynn Santi and sophomore Haley Hall. They broke school records in Grinnell and hope to make the next leap to state. Coach Mann says they have room for improvement.

“I think both of those relays can improve. With the times they swam last year, It was a travesty they didn’t qualify for state. Hopefully their time is fast enough this year. We also hope to break a school record in the 200 free relay on Saturday.” said Mann.

Boone will be facing some stiff competition in this weekends regional. On paper, there are 3 teams that are ahead of the rest and Boone is tied for 4th. Mann says they aren’t concerned with team points at this meet and the only goals are fast times and fun swimming.

Boone is looking ahead to state and hoping to push three relays into the meet. The 200 medley, 400 free, and 200 free relays will most likely have times good enough to qualify. On the individual side of things, Kokemiller and Santi have a legitimate shot at making state in their own events. Kokemiller is racing the 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM. Madelynn is swimming the 100 backstroke. The top 24 in each event qualify for the state meet.

Boone girls swimming is looking to make history on Saturday as they tackle the regional meet in Fort Dodge at noon.
