The Boone boys basketball team has lost 4 straight games and currently sits at a record of 6-12. They recently dropped a game against the Carroll Tigers with the score being 71-49. Boone shot a season low 25 percent from the field and struggled to get into a rhythm offensively.
Offensively, Boone has been turning the ball over at a high rate. They average 14 turnovers per game and that results in run outs for the opposition. Perry will take advantage of the Toreadors mishaps and exploit them in transition. Boone leads the Raccoon River Conference in free throw percentage and they need to attack the paint to get there and convert. Also, getting to the charity stripe will get Perry’s key players in foul trouble and test their bench depth. Another key for the Toreadors is moving the ball from side to side offensively and not settling for long range jump shots. Junior Tanner Schminke and senior Danny Anderson should help that cause and help Boone be fluid offensively.
Defensively, the Toreadors need to force the ball into some of Perry’s weaker offensive players and keep the ball out of senior Shammond Ivory’s hands. In the first meeting between these two foes, Ivory scored 33 points and led the Bluejays in scoring. Junior Kyle Nevitt struggled in the first matchup, but he is bound to make shots and is a very dangerous player. Boone needs to force the ball into the hands of guys like senior Alex Long and senior Ryan Rathje. If those guys score 25 points a piece, Boone will be content with their gameplan and move on. Also, rebounding was a major issue in the first matchup. Perry had 18 offensive rebounds and junior Janier Puente played a huge role in that category. Junior Lane Losh and senior Maclane Moran need to make contact and keep the Bluejays off the glass.
Boone needs to gain some momentum before they take on ADM in a first round district matchup. They have fallen behind the pace in the Raccoon River conference and their main goal is putting together good performances in preparation for the district tournament.
Make the drive to Perry to watch the Boone boys take on the Perry Bluejays. Tip is at 7:30 pm.
