Boone football was riding a 5 game winning streak and came out of Huxley with a big win over Ballard. With a commanding 35-13 score, The Toreadors need to win 1 out of their last 2 games in order to finish in the top 2 of their district and qualify for the playoffs. Going into the contest, Boone was ranked 8th in class 3A with a 5-1 record.

In the first quarter, Boone had success on the ground with senior Kaden Sherrard and senior Elijah Johnson setting the pace and moving the chains. Senior Kade Morain has been a solid target for senior Tanner Schminke and has made the passing game very efficient. On the defensive side of the ball, Boone has been terrific at containing elite running attacks and the defensive line has been pressuring the opposition. Senior Lantz Reed and senior Devan Baldus are Boone’s cornerbacks and spend their night locking down opposing wide receivers. Late in the quarter, Schminke connected with Morain for a short touchdown. That made the score 7-0 in favor of the Toreadors.

In the second quarter, Ballard established the ground game and started to gain yards. Junior Hunter Wright had himself a night as he carried the Ballard offense. He was running hard and Boone had problems bringing him down. Wright bullied his way into the endzone for a 2 yard touchdown making the score 7-7. Schminke later connected with Morain for a passing touchdown. The defense held up once again and gave the ball back to the offense. Boone stalled out and Ballard had as chance to take the lead near the half. Senior Max Stoltz made a bad read and junior Mason Hulse took advantage with an interception to set up Boone in Ballard territory. With a minute remaining in the half, Schminke connected with junior John Herrick in the corner of the endzone for a touchdown. Schminke’s third passing touchdown of the night made the score 21-7 in favor of Boone at the half.

In the second half, Boone continued to assault the Bomber defense with their passing attack. Morain and Herrick led the Toreadors down the field early in the third quarter. Boone had a chance to put the game away, but couldn’t convert. Ballard’s ground game wore down the Boone defense once again and Wright capped off the drive with his second rushing touchdown of the game. Boone blocked the extra point making the score 21-13 late in the 3rd. A 23 yard touchdown reception for Herrick put the game away and the final score was 35-13.

Boone has now won six straight games and are one win away from clinching their playoff birth in district two. The Toreadors are ranked 8th in Class 3A and are looking to keep their winning streak alive. Boone faces Dallas Center-Grimes at Geoppinger Field this Friday. Kickoff is at 7:30.
