Twenty minutes and 31 seconds after the starting gun sounded, junior Dianna Slight crossed the finish line; the first female finisher for Boone on the day. She took home 41st place in the meet overall. Two minutes later, sophomore Hannah Eppert came in with a time of 22:31, good for an 89th place finish. Freshman Ellen Castle had a strong showing and followed closely behind in 90th place. Next came the seniors, with Sarah Heiller and LeAnn Pena putting forth quality finishes. All in all, the Toreador girls effort was good enough to earn them 15th place out of 17 teams.
For the boys, senior Derek Hahn led the way with a time of 18:00, nabbing a 91st place finish. A minute later, sophomore Max Hyatt came in with a time of 19:00, earning him a 110th place finish. junior Brandt Phillips posted an impressive time of 19:29, and freshman Noah Lee completed the course in 20:27. The boys came in at 18th place overall out of 18 teams.
The ‘Dors were simply outlasted by fast, 4A competition in this one, with some of the state’s best runners on hand.
However, Boone is making strides at the right time. Slight cut nearly an entire minute off her time from last week’s meet at Perry, and both Eppert and Castle improved upon their times. Boys runner, Derek Hahn, took 24 seconds off his previous time also.
Boone Cross Country is hosting the Raccoon River Conference meet next Tuesday, October 13th at Cedar Pointe Golf Course. Following that, they will have the State qualifying meet on October 22nd.
