Early in the first quarter, Boone felt the pressure of the environment and struggled offensively. Newton got out to an early 8-0 lead and forced head coach Justin Baute to use a timeout and rally the troops. Senior Ethan Lewis gave Boone their first basket of the season on a three pointer. On the defensive side, Boone struggled to lock up Newton’s main offensive weapons senior Connor Gholson and junior Garrett Sturtz. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 16-13 in favor of the Cardinals.
In the second quarter, Boone began to assert their size advantage. Senior Gabe Krafcisin had a great night in the post and scored 19 points on the night. His interior size drew in defenders and opened up the floor for Boone’s guards. However, Gholson and Sturtz continued to hit shots and prevented the Toreadors from taking a lead. Foul trouble became a factor for Boone as senior Tanner Schminke racked up 3 fouls before the break. At the half, Newton led Boone 30-27.
Boone came out slow in the first minutes of the second half and Newton gained their biggest lead of the night going up by 10. The Toreadors then got hot from deep and reeled the game back in. The Cardinals began to crash the offensive boards and got a few second chance buckets to maintain their lead through the third quarter. Putting the score at 54-50 through three quarters.
Newton’s crowd got to a deafening volume in the fourth quarter and put the pressure on the Toreadors. Lewis hit his stride and did a terrific job of managing the offensive tempo, but the Cardinals were able to maintain their single digit lead. Sturtz shouldered the offensive scoring load for Newton. The game appeared to be out of reach until the Cardinals received a technical foul with 30 seconds left and a score of 73-65. Lewis was also fouled on a three pointer and stepped up to the free throw line for five shots. He converted all five to pull the Toreadors within three and with possession. Lewis was unable to make a three pointer in the closing seconds and Newton came away with the victory 75-70.
