This tennis season, the Boone girls team has gained a powerhouse freshman from Gilbert, freshman Davi Patterson. Being the number one player for the team, she is extremely excited for this season.
Starting with a cheap Walmart racquet seven years ago after loving tennis on the Wii, Patterson quickly started getting into the sport. From starting to go to clinics in town, she got more and more involved with tennis, eventually traveling nationally to play tournaments. Patterson states, “I remember I went to Florida once to train and play a clay tournament- playing while sliding is a lot harder than you’d think.”
When being asked how she has developed as a player over the years, Patterson answers, “My previous coach, Ryan Roeth, deserves the most credit for making me who I am as a player. Although he moved a few years ago, he basically created my strokes and mentality; I owe him a lot.”
Patterson originally planned on playing for Ames, but wasn’t allowed. She then turned to Boone, and after meeting the players and coaches, she’s glad things turned out this way. “Despite knowing no one coming into it, in just a matter of days I felt like I was part of the team. I prefer team tennis to individual competition, so I’m really looking forward to what’s to come with playing with the Boone girls.”
When asked about what she thinks is challenging about tennis, she answeres: “Right now, I’m pretty poor at playing strategically, so my goal is to become a smarter player. Tennis is a year-round thing for me, but it’s an incredibly mental and physical sport. I used to have bad knee problems and I took a few months off last year, so I’m trying to get back into it. My asthma is acting up, too, again, but so far I’ve been pretty healthy.”
