The first time since 2000, the Boone Toreador Softball team got the job done and qualified for The State Softball Tournament in Fort Dodge. They qualified by beating the fourth-ranked team in 4A, Waverly Shellrock, 2-0.
The game started out positive for the girls when they won the coin flip and got their choice at home. Many positive things happened last night, the crowd wore red, the dugout was the loudest it has been, and the defense and offense were very solid.
The girls went through the first three innings 0-0, until courtesy runner, sophomore, Samantha Kelley got the team on the board ny stealing home base on a wild pitch. The sixth inning, Senior Stefanie Davis hit an RBI to score Kelley once again. With more insurance on the board, the ‘Dors kept giving it their all.
As the seventh inning quickly approached, Sophomore Caitlynne Shadle ended the game earning the third out by cleanly fielding a ground ball.
Pitcher, Breanna Hunter, pitched a shutout with only five hits and one walk. She was also able to help her defense out by stopping three that came her way.
The girls start their tournament play Tuesday, July 19 against Bishop Heelan (Sioux City) at 3:30 pm in Fort Dodge.
