On January 5, the Boone Girls Basketball kicked off the new year with a win against Winterset. This was the girls sixth consecutive win, the game scoring at 49-41. Currently ranked at no.15, Boone’s record is actually just a game and a half under that of no.1 ranked team Ballard.
Caitlynne Shadle, sophomore, led the team by scoring 17 points through the game. Sophomore Claire Sandvig also played a strong game, having 16 rebounds, and in addition, scored 10 points. The girls rebound record far out-did Winterset at 47-22.
Going into the game, junior Emma Rouse says, “A challenge I think is going to be learning how they play, then pushing them back on offense.” Despite these worries, the girls came together as a team and bagged another win. Through the entire game, their communication and intensity stayed strong, which was another worry team member - senior Mallory Erb voiced.
The girls held a strong defense throughout the game, in the first quarter Winterset pushed the Toreadors as they attempted to learn how they played, Winterset scored nine points, while Boone only scored ten. In the second quarter, Boone got the hang of their playing method and held Winterset to three points, while scoring nine more themselves. Four minutes into the second half, Boone led by 13 points and ended the game with an eight point difference, having held strong throughout the second half of the game. Come out and support the Toreadors at their next game on Tuesday January 19, vs. Newton at Boone High School, starting at 7:30.
