I sat on a cold bus ride home after another tough loss, and thought to myself, when was it going to get better? When were we going to develop a winning culture? I spent countless weeknights throughout my childhood watching Boone Basketball teams get outworked game after game. As far back as I can remember, Boone has been settling for below average performances in nearly every sport. Something has to give. And it starts with the mentality of the players. After yet another defeat at the hands of the almighty Carroll Tigers, I entered the locker room and overheard a couple of upperclassmen saying, "At least we didn't get blown out." That's Boone sports in a nutshell. Guys were talking about how cool of a dunk Carroll's star player had thrown down late in the game. They can't be serious right? They just got their asses handed to them for 32 minutes and they're going to talk about how cool of a play the other team had?
Maybe it's because none of these guys have ever tasted what success is like. And I don't think they're ever going to with that mindset.
The idea of this article is not to degrade anyone, or for anyone to be offended. It’s more of a call to action than anything.
Also, I am not saying that I have all of the answers. It’s going to take a team effort in order to begin to turn this ship around. And I think a majority of it is the mentality we have. The effort is there, but we need to find a way to correlate it from practice, to Friday nights.
The great Jim Rohn once said, “There are two types of pain you will go through in your life. The pain of discipline and the pain of regret.” There is no way I’m going to leave this school without doing something special. Without experiencing at least a little bit of success.
It's time for change. No more moral victories. No more messing around. Before I know it, I'll have a shot to go out and do something about it. To go out and leave it all on the floor and not be satisfied until we're winners. Because what's more fun than winning a championship with your best friends?
