Fans filled the stands Saturday, August 29th for the first game of the Toreador Football season against the Ballard Bombers after getting rained out Friday night. The game was still scoreless going into halftime after both teams put up a great defensive stand.
Things started heating up early in the third when the Bombers put the first points on the board, scoring a touchdown three minutes in. Boone made a comeback during their next possession with a 60 yard touchdown pass to Senior Wide receiver, Danny Anderson.
With the game tied up, the Toreadors secured a field goal, quickly followed by a safety on Ballard at the end of the 3rd quarter, 16-15 in Boone’s favor.
The fourth quarter gave Ballard a chance to get some short passes down the field, the Bombers scored on a short run followed by a 2 point conversion putting them up by 7 with a little over a minute left in the game.
With under a minute left, Junior Quarterback, Tanner Schminke, launched a 20 yard pass to Sophomore Wide Receiver, John Herrick, who tipped the ball to himself for a reception. After running nearly 40 yards, Herrick got pulled down at the one yard line, leading the Toreadors to tie the game, sending the game into overtime.
In OT, Boone had first crack at the endzone. With 1st and 10, Schminke threw a cross field pass to Junior Wide receiver, Eli Johnson, for what looked to be like an easy six points. But after a controversial call by the side official, they called it back for 2nd and goal on the two yard line. The Bombers held the Toreadors the next 3 downs, causing a turnover. Ballard struck fast on offense, running in for the winning touchdown on 1st and 10 giving them the win, 23-29.
After the game Head Football Coach, Mark Camenisch, told BooneTV, “there were a lot of good plays tonight, and the team did a lot of good things during the game, but we still have some things to work on for next week.”
The Toreadors will be traveling to Gilbert to challenge the Gilbert Tigers this Friday, September 4th at 7:30 pm.
