Homecoming week kicked off Sunday night with the Powderpuff game. Senior and Junior girls represented their grade on the gridiron playing flag football. Members of the football team volunteered as coaches and instructed the girls at their two practices.
Coaches implemented offense and defense and taught the players basic football terminology and rules. Junior coaches were Lane Losh, Kade Morain, Brandon Pohl, Michael Stark, and Tanner Schminke. Senior coaches were Eli Hicks, Danny Anderson, Cade Burma, and Jackson Hull. Junior coach Tanner Schminke really enjoyed the experience.
“It was fun being able to coach during the game instead of being the one playing.” said Schminke. “It really changed my perspective of football and it was fun teaching the girls the fundamentals.”
The players and coaches weren’t the only ones getting a change of perspective. Groups of Senior and Junior boys took the role of cheerleaders. The cheerleaders are always a good time for the crowd. Boys dress up like prima donnas and put together a halftime performance for the players and fans. There were around a dozen cheerleaders for the Juniors and Seniors. They engaged the students in cheers and made the environment at the game excellent.
“I thought it went better than I expected.” said McBride. “I will definitely do it again if we have this game again next year.”
The Seniors got out to a 28-0 lead at halftime, but the Juniors closed in late making the final score 28-14 in favor of the Seniors. Senior quarterback Ciara Wafful made some nice throws and connected with her receivers Carlie Romig and Breanna Sterenberg. The Juniors played some great defense in the second half. One of the notable highlights was Junior Allie Swanson leaping through the air and intercepting a throw from Wafful. Junior Gabby Fuentes anchored the defensive line and had her share of tackles (flag pulls).
“I had a lot of fun!” said Fuentes. “It was a lot more fun than I expected and I pulled a lot of flags out there!”
Rumors have been swirling around Boone High that this is the last year for the Powderpuff game. This is because girls have been getting hurt in past years and cancelling it prevents injuries. Principal Kris Byam has said he is trying to incorporate alternative activities for students to participate in during homecoming week in place of the Powderpuff game.
