This past Friday, the Toreadors (1-4) hosted the Carroll Tigers (3-2) in Boone High School’s yearly Homecoming game. Coming into the game, the Toreadors just received a loss from their previous opponent, Dallas Center Grimes; while their opponent, the Carroll Tigers had been coming off a two game win streak with their most recent win coming from a victory over Perry.
The Carroll Tigers struck first with an early touchdown by senior running back Matt Pauk making it the first of three in the game. The Toreadors struggled to gain any momentum in the first half, many of their drives ending in fourth and short. This caused the Toreadors to punt a majority of the time in the first half. Because of the Toreadors’ struggle on offense, Carroll scored 14 unanswered points making the score 21-0 in favor of the Tigers late in the second quarter. However, right before the end of the first half, the Toreadors scored their first points with a seven yard rushing touchdown from junior running back Kaden Sherrard, making the halftime score 21-7, the Toreadors trailing.
As the second half began, the Boone Toreadors’ defense was able to limit the Carroll Tigers’ offense by creating more third down stops; giving the Boone Toreadors’ high powered passing offense more opportunities to shorten the lead. However, the Tigers’ defense held strong only allowing the Toreadors to score seven more points off a two yard scramble from junior quarterback Tanner Schminke. In the end, the Tigers scored 13 more points in the second half making the final score Carroll Tigers 34, Boone Toreadors 14.
Although this was the Toreadors’ second consecutive loss, junior defensive end Tanner Frost believes the Toreadors played a well fought game and is already looking forward to improving for next week's match.
“We had a lot of good things to say about our game. It was closer than the score read. The defense made some great stops and the offense flowed well in parts of the game. But if we can do both of those all game this Friday, I know our boys are ready to come out on top again,” stated Frost.
Even though the Toreadors received a loss in their Homecoming game, Frost and the rest of the Boone High Toreadors are keeping their confidence high and are looking to improve on their journey to ending the season on a high note.
