On Tuesday, May 24th, the Toreador Baseball team took to the field looking to spark light in a new season. They did exactly that taking the Winterset Huskies to 10 innings (11-10).
The starting pitcher senior Storm Wagner struggled in the early going but quickly picked it up. In the top half of the first inning, the ‘Dors gave up 4 runs, but bounced back in their half, scoring quickly and easily with 6 runs.
After stalemating for another inning, the Huskies added another 2 runs while holding Boone scoreless. In the top of the fourth inning, sophomore Dresden Wilson headed out to the mound. Wagner ended with three innings pitched (IP), five hits (H), two earned runs (ER), and two strikeouts (Ks). After the fourth inning the score was 6-6.
Winterset again jumped out to the lead by scoring two in the fifth and then holding the ‘Dors offense scoreless again. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh inning senior first baseman Dylan Appenzeller and the Toreadors went out and held the Huskies to no runs and left the score at 8-6 in favor of the Huskies. With Boone’s back against the wall, they came through and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh.
It looked like the fans were going to get more than they paid for because the Toreadors and the Huskies were heading to extra innings. Wilson trotted out to the mound for yet another outing. He held the Huskies scoreless for another two innings.
In the top of the 10th inning the ‘Dors gave up two runs off of three hits. Heading to the bottom of the 10th inning, Winterset had the advantage 10-8.
Magic had struck Memorial Park in the bottom of the 10th inning. Due up was sophomore Evan Appenzeller, senior Alex Carey, and senior Danny Anderson. Evan Appenzeller had a very timely hit in the second and first base hole leading off with a single. Carey had a base hit. Now with runners on second and third, Anderson was ready to go. He laid down a bunt and beat the throw to load up the bases with junior Tanner Schminke coming up. Schminke hit a grounder into a 6-4 fielder's choice and scoring Evan Appenzeller. Senior Nolan Newcomb then hit a fly ball to second baseman in the outfield scoring a run and advancing Schminke to second. Senior Drew Wilbur then stepped up to the plate and knocked one to right field. Schminke went from second to home and scored the winning run.
The winning pitcher was Dresden Wilson, he had 7 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, and 7 Ks.
The Toreadors rushed the field after a magical 11-10 win. They play again tonight. Wednesday, May 25th, at 7 o’clock. Come out and join the ‘Dors in a matchup against the Newton Cardinals.
