The Boone Toreadors will take on the DCG Mustangs this Friday night at 7:30 in a very important district game at Goeppinger Field. The Toreadors look to improve to 7-1 and remain undefeated in the district. The Toreadors are currently on a 6 game win streak, with their only loss coming in the first game of the season to the second ranked team in 3A, the Creston Panthers.
The Toreadors have been on a roll on both offense and defense lately as they have outscored their opponents 146-36 in their last four games. Senior Tanner Schminke has been efficient in the ground game and through the air as he has rushed for 721 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns and has thrown for 1007 yards for 13 touchdowns on the season. He is looking for more of the same against the Mustang defense.
The Mustangs come into Friday night's matchup with a 5-2 overall record and only one loss in the district. The Mustangs are led on the ground by their senior running back Nathan Brown who has rushed for 745 yards on the season for 10 touchdowns. On defense, junior Trent Carpenter leads the Mustangs with 57.5 tackles as well as ball hawking safety senior Trey Washington, who has 4 interceptions on the year.
The Mustangs have a very aggressive defense. “We should try to throw short quick passes and then incorporate our running game. We just have to have a balance within our offense to keep them guessing on defense,” said Junior John Herrick. Junior safety and wide receiver Mason Hulse also added by saying, “It’s one of the biggest games of the year for us so far. We just have to stay focus, play how we have been, and we’ll be in good shape.”
With a win the #8 ranked Toreadors will clinch a spot in the 3A playoffs.
