Tuesday night, December 13, the Boone Toreadors (1-3) took on the eighth ranked Grinnell Tigers (3-1) in a non-conference matchup. Boone came in led by senior guard Ethan Lewis and senior center Gabe Krafcisin, both averaging 10+ points per game. Grinnell was led by senior guard Sam Allen and senior forward Cade McKnight who combine for 50 points per game.
To start off the first quarter Grinnell won the tip and got a quick easy bucket. The Toreadors locked in on defense though, holding the high powered Grinnell offense to only 10 points in the quarter. The Toreadors also moved the ball well offensively getting a lot of open looks as they poured in 18 first quarter points.
In the second quarter the Tigers got to the free throw line frequently and started to cut down the Toreadors lead. At the end of the first half the Toreadors had a five point lead the score was 33-29 headed in the locker room.
The Toreadors came out hot after halftime as they went on a 11-2 run to start the third quarter pushing the lead to 44-31. The rest of the quarter went back and forth with the Toreadors ahead 58-47 to start the fourth.
Grinnell started the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run and cut the lead to 58-54. The Tigers pulled the game to within two, at one point with a score of 65-63, but the Toreadors were resilient and finished on a 9-2 run and won the game 74-65.
Lewis led the way for the Toreadors as he scored a career-high 30 points. For the Tigers the duo of Allen and McKnight combined for 47 of Grinnell’s 65 points.
The Toreadors are back in action Friday night at home against the Carlisle Wildcats in a Raccoon River Conference battle.
