This past Friday the Boone High School Girls Varsity Basketball team took on the Carlisle Wildcats in the opener of a double header. Heading into the game, the girls Toreador team was 1-2 and looking to reach their second win of the season. The Toreadors started out strong by getting and maintaining a lead early on and throughout the first half. The first half ended with the score 23-12 with Boone leading. Once the second half began the Toreadors maintained their lead by outscoring Carlisle in the third quarter 17-10 giving them the lead 40-22 at the start of the fourth. Despite stronger play from the Wildcats in the second half, Boone ended their strong performance with a commanding lead of 56-33.
The Toreador’s dominant win over the Carlisle Wildcats was led by an outstanding performance from the sophomore big, Claire Sandvig. Sandvig had a career night on Friday scoring 22 points, going 10 for 13 shooting, adding two free throws to her point total. Sandvig was also able to snatch eleven rebounds and three blocks to top off her standout performance.
After the game, girls coach James McPartland felt like the whole team played well as a group. “Friday was a great win. We were able to play great team defense and hold down their leading scorer and one of the state’s best point guards to 14 (and she was averaging 23). We have been improving each day and each game and if we continue to do that we will have success.”
The victory for the girls Toreador team was the first of two this past weekend. Their second win came against the Norwalk Warriors with a final score of 45-44. The girls will be traveling on Tuesday to face the Marshalltown Bobcats in hopes of keep their winning streak alive.
